3 So, who can tell us how ya use an apostrophe?
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation So, who can tell us how ya use an apostrophe? I’ll give yes ye GCSE for tellin us 3 different ways to do it, like! All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

4 AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion
AO6: Use accurate punctuation If you only got one, that’s amazin’! If you got two, that’s amazin’! If ye got three, you’re lying! But, that would be amazin’ as well… All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

5 AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion
AO6: Use accurate punctuation Apostrophes are used in two very clear ways. Have a look at the following exercise and see if you can identify where they go (Level 4), and what they are doing (Level 6) All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

6 Fill in the appropriate apostrophes:
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation Fill in the appropriate apostrophes: The class didnt go on the schools trip to the zoo because the school hadn’t ordered the company buses. However, the next days activities proceeded as planned. At the bus stop, before entering the zoos gates, the teacher said that students shouldn’t fool around, but that they must write down the animals habits. He would mark the pupils notebooks. The students attitude was positive. At the days end, the teacher felt that the childrens behaviour and discipline had been excellent. All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

7 Fill in the appropriate apostrophes:
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation Answers Fill in the appropriate apostrophes: The class didn’t go on the school’s trip to the zoo because the school hadn’t ordered the company buses. However, the next day’s activities proceeded as planned. At the bus stop, before entering the zoo’s gates, the teacher said that students’ shouldn’t fool around, but that they must write down the animals’ habits. He would mark the pupils notebooks. The students’ attitude was positive. At the day’s end, the teacher felt that the children's’ behaviour and discipline had been excellent. All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

8 How did you get on? That’s amazin’!!
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation How did you get on? That’s amazin’!! As you probably already know, apostrophes are used for omission and to denote belonging. The last exercise was full of amazin’ examples for you to practice. But, there was a tricky one that if you managed to identify correctly would be amazin’. My favourite one was this one: All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

9 Then, they’re, used here to denote belonging
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation The class didn’t go on the school’s trip to the zoo because the school hadn’t ordered the company buses. However, the next day’s activities proceeded as planned. They’re used here to indicate a letter has been left out – this is called omission. Then, they’re, used here to denote belonging All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

10 If ya get this one correct, then you can use apostrophe at level 4!
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation He would mark the pupils’ notebooks. The students’ attitude was positive. Notice that the words ‘pupils’ and ‘students’ are plurals. If you want to denote belonging to a pluralised noun, then the apostrophe comes after the s’ – The pupils’ pens/ school. This implies there more than one student But, these two examples are a bit trickier. Where should the apostrophes go, and why? If ya get this one correct, then you can use apostrophe at level 4! All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

11 AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion
AO6: Use accurate punctuation It doesn’t end there with plural nouns – they can be quite tricky, sometimes. For example, where would the apostrophe go here, for a level 5, then explain why for a level 7! The childrens parents All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

12 Plurality has already been achieved in the irregular noun – children.
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation Plurality has already been achieved in the irregular noun – children. Child’s parents – denotes one child Children’s parent – denotes more than one child Therefore, the apostrophe comes before the ‘s as plurality has already been achieved. Can you think of any more nouns that are affected in the same way? All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

13 AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion
AO6: Use accurate punctuation Just one last thing. Remember that if you are denoting belonging to a noun that ends in ‘s’, for example ‘James’, you would not add another ‘s’, but just put the apostrophe at the end. Can you think of any other names that would be affected in the same way? All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

14 This sounds difficult, but it is really simple.
AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation This sounds difficult, but it is really simple. Have a look at these amazin’ examples and see if you can put the apostrophes in the right places. All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6

AO5b: Organise grammatical features to support cohesion AO6: Use accurate punctuation Simon, ya plant-pot! They’re gunna dooooo fine! Cheryl, these guys better get this stuff right, because they have got one hell of an assessment coming up! All will use apostrophes in sentences, though not always accurately – Level 4 Most should use apostrophes for omission and to denote belonging, with some accuracy – Level 5 Some could use apostrophes confidently in more ambitious structures – Level 6
