Trade Items: textiles, metals, pottery, spices Roles of Women: not equal, but they could be powerful in this society; some were trained as warriors and bodyguards Religion: They were a Hindu empire Culture Description: Warriors, Traders, Businesslike Important Fact: example of a powerful regional state in the early medieval period ( )

8 The Pirates As Europeans took control of all the money and trade in the region, people had to get creative to make money… Many people turned to piracy to make money and get what they needed Often times pirates were local people just trying to make a living trying to avoid the Europeans The Europeans responded by trying to crush and capture anyone who wouldn’t follow their rules Caused Indian Ocean trade network to eventually fail
