3 How many ways of separating solids from liquids are there?
There are exactly 11 ways. Filtering Sieving Evaporating Decanting Sublimating Simple Distillation Distillation Separating Funnel Absorbing (Invented 2014) Chromatography Magnetic Attraction

4 Which ones are frequent?
Evaporation Filtration Basically used for separating soluble solids from liquids. We heat the solution and the liquid evaporates and leaves the solid behind because the solid is too heavy. This is the only way to separate a soluble solution. We separate insoluble solids from liquids using Filtration. Using 2 beakers, a funnel and filter paper, we can do filtration. One beaker consists of the solution. The solution is put in the filter paper that is covered with the funnel that leads into the 2nd beaker.

5 Which ones are frequent? (2)
Sieving Decanting Using a sieve, that has tiny holes, we can separate solids of different sizes from another solid. Different sieves have different sizes of holes. Decanting is to pour off. We use this method for separating hard solids like marbles and stones from a liquid. By holding back the solid and letting the liquid go.

6 Definitions Soluble – A solid that can dissolve in a liquid
Insoluble – A solid that cannot dissolve in a liquid. Solution – When a solid is mixed to a liquid, it is called a solution. Evaporates – The opposite of condense and it is when a liquid turns into a solid by heat. Funnel – A material that is used to pour a solid to a beaker without making it fall.

7 Definitions 5. Filter Paper – A kind of paper that has microscopic holes that allows liquids to pass through and not the solid 6. Microscopic – Extra tiny holes 7. Decanting – To pour off 8. Sieve – A material used for sieving.

9 Evaporation Alvin and Simon had a shipwreck and they landed on an island. They had no water or food. They tried to do something with what they had from the shipwreck. Write the following into your copybook & answer the questions on the next page. (Answers given) They had 2 mugs (One black, One White), a cold plate, a lighter, paper, pen and a candle and used seawater. Answer the questions on the next page with the help of the diagram given.
