15 Physical vs. Chemical Chemical Physical Some new substance Nothing New
Good indication is temperature change or gas formation. Physical Nothing New Can change state (liquid to gas, solid to liquid, ect.), but still the same thing. Chemical changes are changes that result in a new substance being present that was not there before. So if I react vinegar with baking soda to form carbon dioxide bubbles, this is a chemical change because the carbon dioxide was not there before the reaction, but it was there after. During a physical change, no new substances are there after the change occurs. It can change state, like when ice (solid H2O) melts to make water (liquid H2O), but nothing new is created.

16 Basic Atomic Structure
Atomic Number Number of Protons Atomic number is always the number of protons. So if the atomic number is 7, every atom of that element has 7 protons in it. If you change the number of protons, you change the element.

17 Basic Atomic Structure
Atomic Mass Protons + Neutrons Atomic mass is always found by adding the number of protons with the number of neutrons in the atom. So if a Lithium atom had 4 neutrons, the atomic mass would be 7 because we add the 3 protons to the 4 neutrons to have a total mass of 7.
