"Sustainable Forest and Landscape Management for a Resilient Future in the Pacific Region” Pacific Week of agriculture side event Forestry technical meeting

2 CONTEXT Our landscapes that includes forests and trees are vital for our survival. They continue to take centre stage in international and regional fora because of the vital roles they play in climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, livelihoods enhancement and ecosystem services. Having better managed and healthy ecosystems means better resilience for forests and landscapes and therefore communities that rely on these important resources to cope with the impacts of climate change and other challenges.

3 Context But despite these benefits, we continue to pressure and threaten our resources through unsustainable development and practices our landscapes that includes forests and trees require our urgent attention in terms of their better management and use to ensure that the products and services that they provide are maintained and/or enhanced in a sustainable manner.

4 context The current climate change negotiations under the UNFCCC, the Aichi targets under CBD offer some hope for developing countries through mechanisms such as REDD+ and Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR). Funding can be made available to enable countries to restore degraded forest and landscapes, improve the management of their forests and genetic resources, in terms of better policy framework, better forest data and information, improved human technical capacities and the development of alternative sources of livelihoods for the land owning communities.
