1. Unreliable Narrator
An unreliable narrator are those whose accounts we cannot trust.
They may be sick, ill- informed, deliberately or innocently misleading, or incapable of understanding what is happening.
Often they are too close to the story/characters to be unbiased.
The two main narrators in Wuthering Heights are Lockwood and Nelly Dean. Lockwood’s not really good with people (or understanding them), and Nelly Dean is a bit of a romantic—she loves gossip and drama! So…

2. Byronic Hero
19th century poet Lord Byron coined the term…he was kind of one himself!
A Byronic hero is a self- tormented outcast who is cynical and contemptuous of societal norms and is suffering from some unnamed or mysterious sin.
However, on the surface they may come across as charismatic, charming, attractive, and mysterious.
Examples: Edward Cullen, Batman, The Phantom of the Opera

3. Dialect…Basically, What the Heck is Joseph Saying?!
Dialect – A distinctive variety of language spoken by members of an identifiable regional group, nation, or social class.
Joseph, the servant in Wuthering Heights, has a strong Yorkshire accent. This accent is not easy to understand, even for English people!

4. So…Have Fun With This!
'What are ye for?' he shouted. 'T' maister's down i' t' fowld. Go round by th' end o' t' laith, if ye went to spake to him.'
'Is there nobody inside to open the door?' I hallooed, responsively.
'There's nobbut t' missis; and shoo'll not oppen 't an ye mak' yer flaysome dins till neeght.'
'Why? Cannot you tell her whom I am, eh, Joseph?'
'Nor-ne me! I'll hae no hend wi't,' muttered the head, vanishing.
'What do you want?' he shouted. 'The master's down in the fold [sheep pen]. Go round the end of the barn if you want to speak to him.'
'There's nobody but the mistress, and she'll not open it for you if you make your frightening din [noise] till night.'
'Not me. I'll not have anything to do with it,' muttered the head, vanishing.

5. Frame Narrative or Frame Story
A story in which another story is enclosed or embedded or one which contains several such tales.
Examples: The Canterbury Tales, Slumdog Millionaire, Forrest Gump

6. Romanticism
An 18th and 19th century literary movement that is frequently characterized by the following:
Settings are exotic or remote (think old castles or mansions)
Emotionally intense characters
Focus on ghosts, superstition, legends, and dreams
An interest in nature and its beauty and/or fierceness
A hero or heroine who rebels against the social norms of his or her society

7. Gothic Literature
Gothic (genre)-fiction which emphasizes the following: the grotesque, gloomy settings, mystery, violence, and supernatural occurrences
Examples: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and pretty much any work by Edgar Allan Poe!
