1 The Changing Population
Years 1 to 6 What does ‘population’ mean?

2 The Changing Population
Our school population: How many children are there in my class? How many children are there in my school? How many classes are there in each year group? How many boys are there in my class? How many boys are there in my school? How many girls are there in my class? How many girls are there in my school? How many teachers are there in my school?

3 The Changing Population
The population of our local area: What is the overall population in my local area? How many household languages are there in my local area? How many women are there in my local area? How many men are there in my local area? How many people aged 0 to 4 years are there in my local area?

4 The Changing Population
Years 5 & 6 Over a hundred years ago there were not as many people in the country as there are today. In 1901, there were just over 2 million people in Wales and just over 30 million people in England. One century later, in 2001 there were nearly 3 million people in Wales and more than 48 million people in England. Let’s look at the next table!

5 The Changing Population
Let’s look at how the population has grown in over a hundred years! Year Wales England Total 1901 2,033,287 30,436,051 32,469,338 2011 3,063,456 53,012,456 56,075,912 Which is the greatest number? And which is the smallest number? Were there more people in 1901 or in 2011? Wales

6 The Changing Population
Let’s look at this table showing the population growth. Year Wales England Total 1901 2,033,287 30,436,051 32,469,338 1911 2,442,041 33,570,142 36,012,183 1921 2,656,474 37,275,526 39,932,000 1931 2,593,332 37,394,668 39,988,000 1951 2,598,675 43,763,031 46,361,706 1961 2,644,023 43,551,977 46,196,000 1971 2,740,000 46,412,000 49,152,000 1981 2,814,000 46,820,000 49,634,000 1991 2,873,000 48,226,000 51,099,000 2001 2,910,200 49,138,831 52,049,031 2011 3,063,456 53,012,456 56,075,912

7 The Changing Population
Here’s the population of Wales and England. The population data is jumbled and in the wrong years. Let’s sort it into the correct order within the table – and talk about the reasons for our choices! Year 1901 1921 1951 1981 2001 2011 Wales 3,063,456 2,033,287 2,910,200 2,656,474 2,598,675 2,814,000 England 37,275,526 43 763,031 30,436,051 49,138,831 53,012,456 46,820,000 What do we predict might change in the future?
