1 All about Phonics! Tuesday 1st October 2019

2 Spoken language supports reading and writing…
Make time to listen to your child talking Show you are interested in what they say Listen at home Play a tune Use puppets Have a two way conversation

3 Phonological Awareness
Phonics Phonological awareness ….is the ability to recognise the letter- sound correspondence in words. It is a visual (i.e. print) and an oral (i.e. sound) skill. ….is an oral skill that is independent of print. Although you can have phonological awareness without phonics, you can’t have phonics without phonological awareness!

4 Letters and Sounds Phase 1 Phase 2 Actively listen to sounds
Nursery rhymes Matching phonemes Alliteration Blending and segmenting i.e. Sound talking Ongoing “Sound talk” Phonemes and graphemes Saying the sounds Simple words – VC and CVC Voiced and voiceless sounds Specific order (not alphabetical)

5 What next…? Phase 3 Phase 4 Digraphs/trigraphs Further “Tricky words”
Reading and writing sentences and phrases Segmenting and blending longer words CVCC words CCVC words Consolidation of all previously learned phonemes

6 Using our Phonic Knowledge

7 Reading at home Read to them!! Read anything… Magnetic/foam letters
Making little words together Breaking words up Alliteration sentences Book Talk

8 Writing at home Spelling is harder than reading Range of pens/pencils
Range of whiteboards/paper/notebooks Writing for a purpose Lower case letters initially Correct grapheme formation Finger strong songs Pencil grip

9 That’s all very well, but how do you do it?!
Teaching sequence – review, teach, practise, apply Using range of teaching techniques Visual – flashcards/IWB/games/made resources Snappy – 15 minutes Display Actions Giving the children opportunities to apply their knowledge within their play Be encouraging – giving it a go rather than getting it “right” initially…

10 The Early Learning Goals…
Reading Writing Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read. Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

11 How to say the sounds correctly…
