1 SS8H3 Analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolutionary Era.
A. Explain the causes of the American Revolution as they impacted Georgia; include the French and Indian War, Proclamation of 1763, and the Stamp Act. a

2 French & Indian War created two problems:
War is extremely expensive. Great Britain incurred tremendous national debt. They didn’t have the funds to sustain another war. If colonists continued to settle west of Appalachian Mountains, (the land Great Britain just won rights to settling) England would have to defend these vulnerable families from hostile natives (allies of French).

3 Solution #1:Proclamation of 1763
King George III issued Proclamation of Forbade settling west of Appalachian Mountains In order to stabilize relations with Native Americans (England could not afford another costly war),

4 Georgia was not concerned:
This angered colonists who had fought in order to gain new land. Some ignored it and settled new lands anyway. Georgia was not concerned: 1. Georgians lived along coastline. (far from Appalachian Mts) 2. Georgia gained new land from Spain and Creeks, which gave them a margin of security from hostile natives. Proclamation of 1763 opened new coastal lands to settle. -South to St. Mary’s -North to Augusta -West to Mississippi

5 Changes to Georgia’s Borders
Charter 1732 Proclamation of 1763

6 1765 Stamp Act Britain passed a tax on paper goods requiring colonists to buy government stamps for nearly all paper goods newspapers licenses & legal documents books, playing cards, etc… Caused widespread protests.

7 “NO taxation without representation”
King George III felt that since the French and Indian War had been fought to protect the American Colonies, the colonists should pay extra taxes to help pay off England’s debts from the war. American Colonists didn’t have equitable representation in Parliament, so the king’s philosophy chafed many. Many American colonists felt they should NOT be taxed without having a voice in the matter. “NO taxation without representation”

8 Patriots: Violence Breaks Out
Response: Citizens reacted violently Speeches against the act Hanging effigies (dummies) against Parliamentary leaders & royal governors. Attacking homes of British officials Tarring & feathering tax collectors Sons of Liberty – a group (patriots) of many upper and middle class citizens joined to protest the tax. They were known for printing propaganda and tarring/feathering Tories.

9 Georgia’s Response Only colony to sell stamps due to Loyalist Governor Wright’s influence. Several prominent Georgians spoke out against this act “Liberty Boys” were the Georgia affiliate of the Sons of Liberty.

10 Import tax on tea, paper, glass and coloring for paint.
Outcome: People stopped painting their homes and switched to drinking coffee instead of tea. Townsend Acts of 1767

11 1770-Boston Massacre Due to the Stamp Act, American colonists began to rebel. Boston, 1770~ A mob of angry colonists taunted and threatened to attack a small unit of British soldiers. The soldiers fired into the mob and killed five colonists. The first casualty of war was Crispus Attucks.

12 Tea Act ($) Cheaper Tea! 1773: In order to prevent the East Indian Trading Company from going bankrupt (and thus losing revenue), England shipped tea directly to colonies where it could be sold for less than colonial merchants could sell their tea. The tax the company had to pay on cargo leaving England was removed, so the company could lower the cost of tea. This gave the company a monopoly on tea and undercut colonial merchants, which left them powerless and angry.

13 Boston Tea Party- 1773 December 1773: several colonists protested the Tea Act by dumping nearly 350 chests of tea ($18k worth) into Boston Harbor. This event was called the Boston Tea Party.
