6. Syphilis What is it ? How many get it?
Syphilis is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum and is a highly contagious disease spread primarily by sexual activity.
How many get it?
In 2015, a total of 23,872 people were diagnosed with primary or secondary syphilis (1st or second stages).

7. Syphilis Signs/Symptoms
People with primary syphilis will develop one or more sores. The sores are usually small painless ulcers. They occur on the genitals or in or around the mouth somewhere between days (average three weeks) after exposure.
People with secondary syphilis may last one to three months and begins within six weeks to six months after exposure. People with secondary syphilis experience a rosy "copper penny" rash typically on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

8. Chlamydia What is it? How many get it?
Chlamydia is a common and curable infection caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis. The bacteria target the cells of the mucous membranes, which are the soft, moist tissues of the body not covered by skin.
How many get it?
Nearly 3 million cases reported each year (the actual number of cases is likely much higher).

9. Chlamydia Signs/Symptoms:
Often none, but if present there may be pus-like discharge from urethra
Treated with antibiotics and tested for with a swab/urine sample
If untreated, can lead to PID and Cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder) in women. In men, prostatitis, scarring of the urethra, infertility, and epididymitis.

10. Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a curable infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
In ,000 cases were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but the actual number of gonorrhea cases in the U.S. each year is thought to be closer to 820,000.
Men may be asymptomatic (without symptoms) but might experience:
Yellowish-white discharge from the penis
Burning or pain when urinating
Urinating more often than usual
Pain or swelling of the testicles

11. Gonorrhea

Abnormal discharge from the vagina that is yellow and sometimes bloody.
Burning or pain when urinating
If untreated can lead to prostatitis in men, as well as same effects as Chlamydia. In women, chronic menstrual difficulties, miscarriage, cystitis, and PID.

12. Herpes Herpes is a viral infection, HSV, and is not curable.
The “classic” symptoms that most people associate with genital herpes are sores, vesicles, or ulcers
Treatments consist of antiviral meds that suppress symptoms.

13. HPV (Genital Warts) HPV is a viral STI
There are many forms of the virus (think forms of the flu), with only a few actually causing genital warts.
There is no cure, only treatment of symptoms.
Almost all sexually active adults will have contracted at least one form of this virus in their lives.

14. HIV HIV is a viral infection (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
Symptoms may include an illness with fever, rash, joint pains and enlarged lymph nodes. Most people do not experience symptoms for a while.
Antiviral meds treat symptoms
HIV affects the body’s immune system: over time, infection with HIV can weaken the immune system to the point that the system has difficulty fighting off certain infections
