1 What is geography? Geography is the scientific study of the Earth’s surface and its various climates, countries, peoples and natural resources.

2 There are Five Themes of Geography- (The way to study the world)
Location Place Human/Environment Interaction Movement Region We will discuss these themes throughout the year while learning about different civilizations

4 Theme 1: Location There are two types of location: 1. Absolute
It describes where a place is on earth. There are two types of location: 1. Absolute 2. Relative location

5 Absolute Location Definition - The exact location of a place on earth
Uses a grid system Includes latitude and longitude (Example: 40ºN, 80ºE ) (Used by our Global Positioning System programs) Can be a complete address

6 Location using Latitude and Longitude
Use your World History Book to take notes on the Equator and Prime Meridian (Page GH4 or GH14, GH15) What is a hemisphere?

9 Compass Rose When reading latitude and longitude, you MUST remember to use the Compass Rose The Compass Rose is the figure on the map that shows the cardinal directions – North, South, East, West
