4 Functional English TTAP summary
Once you’ve been given a text don’t forget to TTAP it! TEXT What type of writing is it? Letter Article/ report Speech Text for a webpage Text for a leaflet TONE What is the tone? Formal Informal How does it feel? Funny Serious Angry Emotional Happy Sad AUDIENCE Who is the text aimed at? People with a specific interest Or maybe: Adults Children Teenagers Men Women PURPOSE Why has the text been written? To persuade To inform To describe To instruct ALL LEVELS!

5 The following appeared in a PC magazine:
To avoid health problems when working at a PC always follow this setup for your workstation: Chair – adjust the height and back and use a footrest. Adjust the armrests so your shoulders are relaxed. Keyboard – place it in front of your body and check your wrists are straight. Mouse – have the mouse in easy reach and make sure there is enough room to move it around. Monitor – The top should be at eye level and not too far away. Avoid glare from sunlight. Small changes can have positive effects! Verbal re-cap – targeted questioning. Check any learners who have been absent.

13 Level 1: Example assessment question
How is the author clearly setting out the main points? What layout features are used to communicate the main points and ideas? How does the author attract the reader’s attention to the main themes? What techniques does the author use to make the different points stand out? What aspects of the layout help the reader find the main points?

14 Level 2: Example assessment question
What characteristics show that this document is an article? Identify two techniques that have been used in the text and explain how they help to convey meaning. (PEE) At level 2 the questions will focus more on the language techniques rather than the layout features.

15 Produce an information sheet about writing summaries
