Do Now List the three types of plates and how they move.
2
Divergent Definition: The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. Features: rift valley new lithosphere created; mid-ocean ridge rift valley new lithosphere created Example: East African Rift Mid-Atlantic Ridge List the following on the diagram and color. Put arrows with the direction Mid-ocean ridge Rift Oceanic crust Asthenosphere Magma Lithosphere
3
Convergent Definition: The boundary between tectonic plates that are colliding.
Oceanic VS Oceanic Lithosphere Continental VS Continental Lithosphere Denser oceanic lithosphere subducts (sinks) under the other plate. Features: volcanic island lithosphere recycled subduction zones deep-ocean trenches Example: Mariana Islands List the following on the diagram and color. Put arrows with the direction Trench Volcanic island Oceanic crust Asthenosphere lithosphere Neither plate is dense enough to subduct under the other. Instead colliding edges crumple and thicken, which causes uplift and creates mountain ranges Features: mountain range Example: Himalayan Mountains List the following on the diagram and color. Put arrows with the direction Mountain range Asthenosphere Continental Crust

Convergent Definition: The boundary between tectonic plates that are colliding.
Oceanic VS Continental Lithosphere Denser oceanic lithosphere subducts (sinks) under the less dense continental lithosphere Features: volcanic arc lithosphere recycled subduction zones deep-ocean trenches Example: Mout St. Helens List the following on the diagram and color. Put arrows with the direction Trench Asthenosphere Continental Crust Lithosphere Volcanic island
5
Tranform Definition: The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally. Plate edges do not slide smoothly past each other. They fracture and scrape against each other and cause earthquakes. Features: Faults Earthquakes Example: San Andres Faults List the following on the diagram and color. Put arrows with the direction Crust Lithosphere asthenosphere
