Seafood populations, such as wild fish, are declining due to overfishing and management practices, which threatens our fish supply and the health of the ocean. As the population of wild fish declines, we rely on farm-raised fish, such as a high-tech tank systems. These farms have a larger carbon footprint, negatively affecting our environment. Wild and farm raised seafood may have different nutritional contents as farmed seafood, like salmon, which are typically fed high fat, high protein diets to produce larger fish. It is our responsibility as consumers to shop responsibly and knowledgably. One resource you can use is guidelines from the Monterey Bay Aquarium: Seafood Watch. Use this guide, along with their free app, to guide you towards sustainable choices. Seafood Seafood is an important component of a healthy diet according to the USDA Guidelines. To reap the nutritional benefits of seafood, adults should aim to consume a minimum of 8 ounces of seafood each week. Seafood is most recognized for containing heart protecting omega-3 fatty acids, but there are many other great benefits to having seafood in your diet. Regular consumption of seafood has been linked to lowered blood triglycerides, lowered blood pressure, and reduced risk of heart disease. Regular consumption of seafood may even improve symptoms of inflammatory diseases. Seafood is known for being high in protein, low in saturated fat, and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, B Vitamins, Vitamin A, Vitamin D and selenium.
