Lesson 10 THE ROCK CYCLE Objective: Explain the characteristics of the three types of rocks and how they fit within the rock cycle.
2
What is a Rock? Naturally-occurring mixtures of minerals, mineraloids (no crystals), or organic matter.
3
What is the difference between a rock and a mineral?
Rocks are made up of two or MORE minerals.
4
There are 3 different types of rocks;
Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic
5
Igneous Rock Igneous rocks are formed by magma and lava as it cools. Form in two different ways. Rock that comes from lava cools very fast = very light/ airy or glassy = Extrusive Rocks that come from magma are formed under ground = very hard and have more colors = Intrusive

Igneous rock
7
Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary rock is made when sediments (sand, gravel, and dirt) are pressed together over time and become a rock Sedimentary rock is formed in layers.
8
Sedimentary Rocks Limestone Shale Sandstone Granite
9
Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic rocks are made from other rocks.
Heat and pressure help change an igneous or sedimentary rock into a new kind of rock (think about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly)
10
The Rock Cycle
11
Source of energy Sun Provides energy for surface processes
Weathering, erosion, and transport Earth Provides internal heat for internal processes Subduction, melting, and metamorphism
