Signs of abuse Emotional or physical Abused children often suffer from low self-esteem Being afraid to go home Difficulty trusting people Unexplained wounds

Date rape-acquaintance rape occurs when sexual activity is forced on an individual during a date Reduce the risk: Never leave your beverage unattended Avoid sexually compromising situations

Rape victims provoke or are responsible for the attach Rape results from sexual feelings Rape steps from the rapist’s desire for control, overpower, and humiliate

6 Depression Depression-long periods of sadness, hopelessness, and lack of energy More serious than occasional “blues” Have trouble carrying out ordinary tasks Eat or sleep more or less than usual

10 Substance abuse Substance abuse-the use of illegal drugs or the misuse of legal drugs Alcoholism-the physical and mental dependence on alcohol Codependency-tendency to allow someone else’s problems to control your behavior

Other adults you trust Community organizations YMCA, hotlines Professional help Psychologists, social workers

12 Support Groups Find strength in joining with others who share their situation Encourage Asking for help is not a sign of weakness Confidentiality-privacy Immediate help is needed if someone is dangerous to themselves or others Hot lines focus on specific problems (violence, rape, substance abuse, suicide, etc.)
