8 Suicide Prevention & Child Abuse Prevention
What must I do if I suspect abuse or neglect of a child? If a child is in immediate danger, call the Principal first. Then call DHR or public authorities to make a report. Then let the counselor know if you’d like us to check in with them. What must I do if I suspect that a child is suicidal or self-harming? Walk the child to the counselor or principal’s office. If you cannot walk the child, call the office to ask for an adult to escort the child to the counselor or principal’s office. © 2018 Bilingual Learner, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

9 Suicide Prevention Signs to Act On Immediately
Threatening to hurt or kill themselves Seeking access to pills, weapons, or other means to kill themselves Talking or writing or drawing about death, dying or suicide (including schoolwork, creative writing, and artwork) Ex. “I don’t know why I’m still here.” “This pain will end soon.” “I can’t take it anymore.” Expressing hopelessness, no reasons for living or having no sense of purpose in life © 2018 Bilingual Learner, LLC. 11 Keep it Confidential Tips to Protect Student Confidentiality
In most states, district is not private and is subject to the Alabama Public Records Law. Avoid talking about students when other students can overhear. #nohallways “Best practice suggests that a very limited number of educators have access to highly sensitive [student] information on a need- to-know basis.” -American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counselors, 2016 © 2018 Bilingual Learner, LLC. 12 New Students Counselors provide the following services to new students: Give new students a tour, orientation, and peer mentor. Review new student records. Schedule a new student into their classes. If you are a school leader or coordinator, check the registrar’s new student and notify us immediately if you have a request. We try to schedule the student in your smallest class but due the limitations of the student’s academic needs and the master schedule, this is often impossible. Contact admin if you feel a new student has to be moved out of your class. © 2018 Bilingual Learner, LLC. All Rights Reserved. m

13 Helpful Reminders! Questions?
The School Counselor website has useful links, information, and forms! Check it out! If a student is threatening to hurt themselves, call us immediately. If we are unavailable, contact the admin. DO NOT LEAVE THE STUDENT ALONE. If the situation is not an emergency, refer student to the counselor. See the Principal for questions about class scheduling/counts.
