Welcome on behalf of EMODnet Community Pleased so many have signed up to join us at the 2nd EMODnet Open Sea Lab

2 Open Sea Lab 2017 The first open sea lab was organised by ourselves at the Secretariat together with VLIZ and imec and support of EC DGMARE - a great collaboration, - VLIZ are an important partner of EMODnet (Central Portal and Biology) with a strong marine data centre … (worms, marine regions etc..) - Imec are what makes Open Sea Lab no ordinary hackathon, bringing their expertise to engage/involve users early on and all through the innovation and development process. Capturing, understanding and validating users’ interactions with products and services, at an early stage.  Transforming ideas into prototypes users can interact with in their daily context. Shaping ‘(minimum) viable products’ through an iterative, agile process.  Designing business models through stakeholder analysis and go-to-market definition.

3 Open Sea Lab 2019 This year, we are pleased to expand the collaboration to a range of new organisations and groups: joining the organising team are CMEMS (marine service of Copernicus is the Earth Observation and monitoring programme coordinated and managed by the European Commission.) and ICES (The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental marine science organization, meeting societal needs for impartial evidence on the state and sustainable use of our seas and oceans. ). Also providing organisational support are - is an interdisciplinary consortium at the university of Ghent combining expertise over 40 research groups from 6 faculties) and an official introduction into the wider network of contacts within the Blue Growth domain - Delighted also to collaborate with Global Fishing Watch, Jaeyoon Park is speaking later, and will remain here as a coach and has provided links to their data sources. OVH (A global hyper-scale cloud provider) who will run to two workshops tomorrow as well as offering great prizes, and finally Greenbridge (a local Blue Growth incubator) linked to University of Ghent

6 Marine Knowledge – Why EMODnet?
Unlocking the knowledge in marine data and observations Application and Innovation Marine Observations Data Information Knowledge Industry (marine/maritime) Research Informed policy and environmental management Assessing, forecasting and risk prevention Informed society OSL is important for EMODnet because it focuses at this stage of the value chain – application and innovation! We in the inner circle of EMODnet are focussing mainly on providing the data and developing some generic products – we can be limited by our own thinking. We want to open it up to users, make more and diverse communities aware of it and and get them using it. This is where OSL comes in. we want to see what you can do with European marine data resources. So we do this for various reasons Increase visibility and stimulate use of our offer/services – some of you may have never heard about EMODnet until recently Gather ideas and showcases of what can be done with our open data offer Test and improve our service – expose and stress test Users feedback on needs and requirements to improve ocean observation, data collection and products

7 EMODnet’s 1st Open Sea Lab –Antwerp 2017
The first open sea lab was a great success, but was much smaller, only 48 applicants. But some great ideas, the winning team designed an app to identify for selecting sites to farm seaweed. This year we have more than double the number of applications, over 100 registered. So we expect great things!!

8 EMODnet’s 2nd Open Sea Lab – Ghent 2019
