How did Hitler become Chancellor?
June 1932 Von Papen becomes chancellor. But he doesn't get support of army. December 1932 Von Schleicher becomes chancellor. But he doesn't get support in the Reichstag so he resigns after 8 weeks. 30th January 1933 Hindenburg asks Hitler to be chancellor, reluctantly. Von Papen becomes vice-chancellor and his supporters are put into the government. Aim: To explain (B) or evaluate (A) the reasons why Hitler became Chancellor

How was Hitler able to become Chancellor?
Anger of Treaty of Versailles. Weakness of Weimar government . The Depression – people turned to extremist policies who promised to actually do something. Nazi organisation- looked like they knew what they were doing. Nazi propaganda – Promised to make Germany strong again. Support of people who hated communists – rich industrialists (helped fund the party) The SA/stormtroopers beat up opponents – created fights which Hitler promised to tackle publicly. 500,000 stormtroopers by 1933. Hindenburg and von Papen OFFERED Hitler the position! Nazis had appealing policies- People began to listen to their ideas. Aim: To explain (B) or evaluate (A) the reasons why Hitler became Chancellor
