Read the ‘Alien and Sedition Acts’ synopsis and these questions:
Define the different elements of the alien and sedition acts in your own words.
Are there any events elsewhere in history that you can connect this to? What?
What do you believe the wisest response would be from those who opposed these acts? (especially the Sedition Acts)

4. Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Read the document (from the Bill of Rights Institute) and answer these questions:
What do you believe made this form of protest against the Alien & Sedition Acts successful?
Summarize Madison’s claim in the Virginia resolution.
Do you agree with Jefferson’s assertion in the Kentucky resolution that states could nullify federal laws? Why or why not?
