Social Security Numbers (SSN)
What is it? a 9-digit number issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to those individuals who are eligible to work in the United States Why do I need it? required in order to be paid for any work you do in the U.S., on-campus or for practical training How do I get it? must have a job offer in order to qualify to apply for a SSN application procedures are outlined on OISSS website

Driver’s License What is it and why do I need it?
A document needed in order to drive a motor vehicle in the U.S. A form of government-issued identification that may carry rather than your passport when in the U.S. How do I get it? Request letter certifying student status from Office of International Student & Scholar Services (OISSS) to confirm that you are maintaining both immigration and academic status Go to the nearest DMV office and bring the following items: a valid passport and visa I-94 Departure Record (indicating F-1 or J-1 D/S) Rollins College Student ID Card Current Form I-20 or DS-2019 A certifying student status letter from OISSS

Cell Phones / Communication with Home
Various options: Pay as you go phones Prepaid cell phone plan - pay in advance for service Contract cell phone plan- billed once a month for a set contract time. Must have a social security number in the U.S. and an established credit history Major carriers – AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint Campus Sim card Phone cards available online Skype, Viber, Tango, Google Hangouts, Oovoo, WhatsApp, SnapChat

Bank Accounts Many banking options in Florida
Shop around before choosing a bank To open an account, you may need to present: photo identification personal data a mailing address money to deposit If you do not have a SSN yet, you may be able to open a non-interest bearing account

Building Credit What is it? Why do I need it? How do I get it?
credit history is a record of how you manage the use of credit Why do I need it? If you plan to use credit to make larger purchases, such as a car or home If you plan to open lines of credit with credit card companies How do I get it? opening a secured credit card if living off-campus, try to open utility accounts in your name open store credit cards; lower line of credit and less risk

Mailboxes College of Liberal Arts students: Your Box # is located on back of your nametag CLA address for mailing is: 1000 Holt Avenue – Box ____ Winter Park, FL P.O. boxes: If you live off campus and wish to have a consistent mailing address, you may rent one from the U.S. Postal Service. Your address with Immigration must always be your physical living address – not a P.O. Box

Transportation LYNX Bus Service: you can consult their website – Taxis: company names & phone numbers are listed on the OISSS website; be sure to plan and call ahead of time Uber & Lyft: two mobile apps that can be downloaded onto any smart phone. SunRail: 12 stops and a station right here in Winter Park’s Central Park. For more information and schedule check – Winter Park Village Shuttle: free with R card; van from Rollins College to Winter Park Village every Friday evening 6pm-11pm
