2 1754-1763: The French and Indian War
French and Indians vs. Colonists British Colonists win and expand empire

3 Proclamation of 1763 EFFECT: Colonists become very upset
Proclamation of The British prohibited colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mts. EFFECT: Colonists become very upset Colonies began to unify!

4 Sugar Act of 1764 Taxed sugar, wine, and other important goods in the colonies. Effect: The Sugar Act made the colonies very upset. Trade restrictions caused colonists to lose money Some colonists started to boycott, or to quit buying, British goods.

5 Stamp Act of 1765-1766 Britain taxed all printed paper documents
Items would be stamped when the tax was paid. Effect: The colonists were angered and boycotted all paper goods and stores. Offenders were to be tried in courts without juries. “No Taxation without Representation”

6 Townshend Acts 1767 New taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea.
Effect: Colonial reaction to these taxes was the same as to the Sugar Act and Stamp Act. Britain eventually repealed all the taxes except the one on tea. In 1768, Great Britain sends more troops to the colonies to deal with resistance in colonies.

8 Boston Massacre (1770) British troops killed 5 people
Effect: Shooting showed the dangers of having British troops in colonial towns. The events of Boston Massacre further angering colonists.

9 1770: Repeal of the Townshend Acts
Ended Acts because British merchants were losing so much money during the boycott Tax on tea remained “I am clear that there must always be one tax to keep up the right, and, as such, I approve the Tea Duty.” -King George III

10 Tea Act of 1773 Cause: Britain needing money to pay of the French and Indian War Effects: Tea Act- This act helped the British east India company by giving it control over the American tea trade Colonist were angry because they still had to pay tax on the shippers. Merchants were upset about new law because they still had to pay taxes on their tea.

11 Boston Tea Party 1773 Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians and boarded three British ships They dumped 90,000 pounds of tea into the sea to rebel against the Tea Act

12 Intolerable Acts of 1774 Effects:
Closed port of Boston until colonists paid for the destroyed tea Banned town meetings Troops quartered in Boston Officials accused of crimes sent to England or Canada for trial Effects: Boycott of British goods First Continental Congress
