MSc Thesis: Spirulina extraction process for innovative healthcare products Motivation and Goals of this Thesis Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) is a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium. Because of its wide level of nutrient contents and beneficial effects to human it has been used as a stable ingredient in dietary supplements. The field of application for Spirulina is widespread as it has been proven to be antigenotoxic, anti- inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-cancer and hepatoprotective neuroprotective. A lot of spirulina products have been developed such as tablets, pastries, health drinks and fermented foods. Claims exist for liquid extracts that offers the possibility of concentrated spirulina products revealing more activity of all components than only dried biomass. Furthermore, production of microalgae in open ponds is conventionally practiced, but exposure on uncontrollable elements impedes achievement of quality. Therefore, development of a stable cultivation method (large- scale photobioreactor) to produce high value products is desirable. The hypothesis is that a proper developed process will render spirulina products economically feasible and allow the production of controlled quality. The goal of the thesis is the establishment of an extraction and purification process for the production of a specific spirulina based product. Opportunities We offer a highly interesting, diversified position comprising bioprocess technology and sustainable products for better health with industrial partners. Requirements Studies in Bioprocess Technology, Biotechnology, or similar. You should have: Experience in analytical methods and background in bioreactor technology Curiosity and patience to transfer established methods to the emerging field of microalgae A superior command of English is required. Furthermore, you should be accustomed to networked and critical analytical thinking, scientifically interested and able to work in a team This paid MSc position starts on October 1st, 2019 and is scheduled for 6 months.
