4 The Story of Industrialization
America started off as small towns along the rivers. This allowed for easy transportation and trade. Draw 2 rivers on your paper. Draw 10 houses. Label one as your own house, one church, a school, a cemetery, a store, a jail, a pub, a hospital, a canal and a bridge. Things started off pretty simple and life was good. America was prospering.

5 As we grow After the Civil War, America started to grow even more and a large need to expand west. More and more people started to come into the cities. Draw 15 more houses around the river. Remember to not make them too far away from the water seeing as that was the main source of transportation. Add one factory (no smoke) needs to be near water because its water powered.

6 Growing More We continue to grow.
Need to add 10 more houses, 1 church, 1 pub and 1 store, 1 school. You may add an additional road and 1 additional bridge.

7 Here comes the FACTORIES
Industry started to come into the cities. The high population in the city and the convenient locations made it ideal for business because of workers and modes of transportation and trade. Draw 10 factories in your city. These factories must be bigger than the houses you have drawn. Make sure they are located on a river or a road. 10 more houses.

8 Profits from textiles The profits from textiles are CRAZY!!!!
Add 5 more factories (no smoke) remember they must be near water, because they are watered powered. 1 school. Add 5 tenements, this is for your poorer families that cant afford their own house. They will be your mill workers, working for very low pay.

9 Work, work, work! Working from sun up to sun down can very be stressful. Add 5 pubs, 4 more tenements. 1 more factory.

10 New Technologies The steam engine will replace all water frames in factories. Add 5 more factories, this time with smoke. You will need to add smoke to all other pre-existing factories. Add 1 Theatre

11 Death Work can be very dangerous for all ages. Especially for the children working in the factories. Add 2 new cemetery, 2 pubs, 2 churches, and 1 school.

12 Need Transportation Fast!
As more and more people came into the cities they started to build away from the water because of space. Draw 10 more houses America need a new source of transportation and ways for trade to be conducted easier. Draw 2 new roads, and a RR track that connects all of your factories. Draw another canal that connects the two rivers.

13 Jobs? With the technology advancements your town is becoming more and more popular. Good or bad? With this, your populations is growing but no new jobs? Add 2 pubs, 1 jail and 1 tenements.

14 More Transportation There is a need for quicker transportation from your civilians. Add 1 railroad line passing from east to west through your town.

15 Then come the immigrants
As America starts to get bigger and better, more and more people want to come in. The original immigrants come from western Europe. However they need somewhere to live. Most of them come with some money but mainly looking for a better life and more money! Draw 10 tenements within your city. Once again these need to be bigger than your houses and a little bigger than your factories.

16 Increases in all aspects. Your town in BOOMING!
Population increase tremendously. Add 15 houses, 1 tenements, 2 stores, 1 church, 2 factories, 1 cemetery, 1 jails, 1 hospital to accommodate your rise in population.

17 When will this stop? There is word that your town has jobs and that your factories are keen to hiring immigrants (because of the low pay). Add 2 more factories, add 3 more tenements, 1 more store.

18 All lies!!! The word is still out that your town has room to grow, even though there is NO room or jobs. Alcohol use and crime will grow. Add 2 tenements, 1 pub, and 1 jail

19 What about the children?
There is a small push for education to help the youth stay out of trouble. Add 1 more school and a 1 factory.

20 Totals Houses: 70 Schools: 5 Cemetery: 4 Pubs: 11 Hospitals: 2
Bridges: 2 Stores: 5 Theatre: 1 Jails: 4 Churches: 5 Factories: 25 Tenements: 25 Railroads: 3

21 Urbanization As America grows westward so does the number of people. Look at your city that you have drawn. As you look at it answer the following questions on the back. Did you find anything difficult about the simulation? What did you notice starting to happen within the cities? What problems do you think might arise from overpopulation? Explain!
