1 Section 1 Every step we take builds on what people did long ago.
We are what we are because of what people did in the past. History is the study of the past. Historians are people who study history. They want to know how people lived and why they did the things they did.

2 Knowing Yourself and Others
Historians study the past to understand people’s culture. Artifacts are what people have left behind. History provides us with a guide to making better decisions about the future. History helps you understand why other people think the way they do. Learning these stories help teach you to respect and understand different opinions.

3 Knowing Your World Even events that happen in other parts of the world affect your culture. History is concerned with the entire range of human activities. It is the record of humanity’s combined efforts. Studying history will help you develop mental skills. History encourages you to ask important questions.

4 Continued It forces you to analyze the facts that you have learned.
When you analyze the facts you can recognize which information is important and which is just extra.

5 Sources of Information
About 5,000 years ago people invented writing. There are two types of historical sources. Primary and Secondary Source

6 Sources of Change Writers of secondary sources don’t always agree about the past. P.O.V.- Point of view As historians review and reanalyze information, the interpretations can and do change.
