‘Kamikaze’ by Beatrice Garland
Suicide attacks were made by Japanese kamikaze pilots in World War II. They would fly bombs into ships and it was considered an honour to die for your country.

Kamikaze All can understand the poem and the influences on the writer (context). Most can write about the form, structure and sound of the poem, using clear references or quotes. Some can refer to a range of techniques used by the poet to analyse and interpret the poem.

What can you infer from this (read between the lines)? 2.What effect does the sea have on the pilot? 3. What were the Japanese expectations and duties? 4. What effect would this poem have on different readers?

Tips for writing a response to the poem ‘Kamikaze’:
Use MISSILE to help you plan your response. Write a paragraph for each letter of MISSILE. In each paragraph, refer to the poem by quoting specific words and phrases. Interpret your quotes by explaining the meaning. Analyse the language, form and structure by using specific terminology and explaining the effect on the reader. Teachers should consider what aspect of MISSILE might be most relevant to focus in on.
