Healthcare Industry Impact of Silicones 2016

What Are Silicones? Silicones are a family of specialty, high-performance materials. The silicone family includes siloxanes and silanes, all of which are widely used in thousands of products Due to their molecular structure, silicones can be manufactured in many forms including: solids liquids semi-viscous pastes greases oils rubber Silicones have an exceptional breadth of chemical and physical properties. Silicones are flexible and resist moisture, chemicals, heat, cold and ultraviolet radiation. Products made with silicones take on these and other important properties so they are more stable, more aesthetically pleasing, easier to use or apply, and longer lasting Healthcare Industry 2016

Industry Silicones manufacturing alone directly employs about 30,000 people worldwide, evenly distributed between Europe, the Americas, and Asia Significantly greater numbers apply to downstream employment – it is estimated that up to 14 million employees may be involved in some form of economic activity that involves silicone products across the globe 1.7 million people in Europe 2.3 million people in the Americas 10 million people in Asia Healthcare Industry 2016

Healthcare A total of 28,000 tons of silicone product was sold to the healthcare market in 2013, generating sales of $280 million Silicones are used in the medical device sector, which employs more than 1 million people globally, with more than 27,000 firms worldwide Silicones are also present in many pharmaceutical products. The pharmaceutical industry generated sales revenue of almost $1 trillion in 2011 and employed nearly 2.4 million people in the 10 largest markets $405 billion sales revenues in the Americas $314 billion sales revenues in Europe $245 billion sales revenues in Asia Healthcare Industry 2016

APPLICATIONS Healthcare Industry 2016

Healthcare Silicones are used in: Molds Tubing
Impression molds in dental care Prosthetics Respirators Intravenous drug and transfusion delivery systems Ventilation masks Cooling caps for chemotherapy treatments Ventilation bags Handles for surgical instruments Breathing tubes Catheters Medical adhesive applications Healthcare Industry 2016

Healthcare Silicones are an integral part of innovative medical treatments and care due to the fact that they are/can: Well-tolerated by the human skin and body Facilitate healing Improve the appearance of existing scars Reduce discomfort Resistant to bacteria, which helps reduce the risk of infection Easy to sterilize Excellent for sensitive applications, such as respiratory tubing and topical medications Not reactive with other materials and do not irritate the body Hypoallergenic, so they can be used safely for skin contact use as well as intravenously By using products made with silicone, you generate on average 9 TIMES LESS GREENHOUSE GASES than were emitted during manufacturing and disposal of that product Healthcare Industry 2016
