LIFE In the Spirit - II Freedom From Defeat
2
In a French railroad station where numerous soldiers
were gathered, there stood a mother with her youngest son. When the train came, the mother gently kissed her son, watched him get on the train, and observed as it pulled out of the station.
3
The boy took out his handkerchief and waved it toward his mother
The boy took out his handkerchief and waved it toward his mother. The mother had a little French flag in her hand as she waved back to her son. After the train pulled out of sight, the mother collapsed in the station like a crumpled flower. Some of the other soldiers ran to her. One of them bathed her face with water and brought her again to consciousness. As she revived, she began to sob, almost half-consciously.
4
“My husband was sent into the war and he will not
come back. My eldest son will not return, for he too, has been killed. My second son has been called into service, and he has been gone for years. Now my youngest son, the widow’s staff, has been called and he has left me.”
5
As the mother repeated those sorrowful words, she happened to see the little French flag that had fallen out of her hand. When she saw it, her eyes flashed. She picked it up, held it high, and began to cry, “But vive la France!”
6
You’re not what you think you are,
but what you think, you are
7
Paul has supreme confidence in the spiritual freedom
inherent in his salvation.
8
Four Facets of Freedom The certainty of Freedom The cause of Freedom
The course of this freedom The consequence of freedom
9
Freedom From Defeat
11
Paul describes three principles related to freedom from defeat :
The unsaved do not have the Spirit The truly saved have the Spirit The Spirit has those who are truly saved
13
Gideon Judges 6-8
14
20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—
they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”
15
21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled.
16
throughout the whole camp;
22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled
17
Freedom From Defeat The unsaved do not have the Spirit
18
but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit
Romans 8 (NLT) 5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
19
by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good
Romans 12 (NKJV) …be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God
20
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true,
Philippians 4 (NKJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure,
21
whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report,
if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy— meditate on these things.
22
6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.
But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace
23
7 For the sinful nature is always It never did obey God’s laws,
hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
24
8 That’s why those who are still under
the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
25
Freedom From Defeat The unsaved do not have the Spirit
The truly saved have the Spirit
26
living in you. 9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature.
You are controlled by the Spirit If [since] you have the Spirit of God living in you.

do not belong to Him at all.)
(And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to Him at all.)
30
10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die
because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.
31
11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.
And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
32
Freedom From Defeat The Spirit has those who are truly saved
The unsaved do not have the Spirit The truly saved have the Spirit The Spirit has those who are truly saved
33
12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, to do what your sinful nature
you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
34
13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die.
But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
35
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God
are children of God.
37
To Lead: Lead by laying hold of Lead by accompanying Lead with oneself Impel or constrain
38
15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves.
Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children. Now we call Him, “Abba, Father.”
40
16 For His Spirit joins with our spirit [bears joint testimony]
to affirm that we are God’s children.
41
17 And since we are His children, we are His heirs.
In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory.
42
that we may also be glorified together.
(NLT) But if we are to share His glory, we must also share His suffering. (KJV) …indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

What Next? Spirit Empowered Life
The sweetest thing I could ever share, the noblest gift I could ever bestow, the grandest news this side of heaven itself is the Good News—Jesus.
45
That is the gift of the Spirit of God. We are to be bold in the faith.

49
What Next? When we intentionally slow down and set rhythms in place
to connect with God, we begin to sense His Spirit and presence throughout the day
50
What Next? Instead of relegating God to a specific time each day,
intentionally seek to weave your awareness of Him throughout your day.
51
He is present and waiting for you to invite Him into each moment
of your unfolding life.

23 gentleness, self-control…
Galatians 5 22 …the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control…
54
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
55
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean it from earth;
through all its pulses move. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
56
Hast Thou not bid me love Thee,
God and King? All, all Thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind. I see Thy cross; there teach my heart to cling: Oh, let me seek Thee, and, oh, let me find!
57
Teach me to feel that Thou
art always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
58
Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love, One holy passion filling all my frame; The kindling of the heav’n-descended Dove, My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
