1 Reliability, MPS, Operations and Tuning Work Packages
Tom Himel With input from Schulte, Tenenbaum, Elsen 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

2 Caveats This is a very early draft Details are sparse
Effort levels are wild guesses Tried to list all the work, but little thought given into how it should be spilt into work packages 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

3 Availability Description: Resources:
Monitor progress of other groups in meeting reliability goals. Aid them with simulations or calculations as requested. Adjust reliability goals to minimize risk and cost as development continues Keep availability model updated to changes in design. Add in more detail as necessary. Should we set up a FMEA plan and get all systems to use it in the design of their parts? (not included in FTE estimate below) What should we do about systems like water instrumentation, collimators, and coupler interlocks that need major MTBF improvements that don’t have ongoing R&D projects? Resources: 1 FTE level of effort through 2nd year of construction 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

4 MPS Description: Specify MPS system including: Resources:
Locations of protection collimators, beam loss monitors, current monitors, halo collimators, shielding of halo collimators, thermal monitoring, flow switches Detailed description of MPS algorithms Specify hardware and algorithms to reduce intensity and recover from a trip Consider fault scenarios and make sure each causes no damage. Refine design based on it. BDS has done a lot of MPS design already. Just check it and suggest modifications to them. Have DR handle their own, but check Specification of mode dependent speed limits on magnet and collimator settings along with checks that these limits will not slow down tuning too much. Design method of making pilot bunches Resources: .33 FTE level of effort through 5th year of construction 2 FTE years for fault scenario simulations. Should be done in first 1.5 years of EDR as results could effect beam-line layouts. 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

5 PPS +BCS Description: Specify PPS + BCS system including: Resources:
Locations of gates and which have key-banks, video cameras etc. Do shielding calculation and design for many locations such as shafts in linac, DR alcoves etc. Specify which power supplies are interlocked and what hazards are covered. This can be a general rule with rough numbers. Specify dumps and shield walls and protection devices to allow people downstream of beam. Specify locations of beam loss monitors, current monitors etc for BCS Resources: 0.5 FTE level of effort through 2nd year of construction 2 FTE-years of rad-physics calculations guided by above LOE person. Should take place in first 1.5 years of EDR as shielding may effect layout. 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

6 Refine alignment and vibration tolerances
Description: Assume sources and DRs refine their tolerances Working with RTML, linac and BDS, refine the tolerances for alignment and vibration of components Check that ILC works for wide range of running conditions: Z0 through 1 TeV, e-e-, γγ This work is coupled with the tuning and feedback work package as the alignment tolerance depends on how one can tune out misalignments and the vibration tolerance is for frequencies above those feedback can reject. Should the two packages be combined? Resources: 2 FTE years. MUST be done in 1st year of EDR so detailed magnet and support designs can be done based on the tolerances. 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

7 Tuning and feedbacks Description: Resources:
Assume sources and DRs design their tuning and feedbacks and we just monitor their work Working with RTML, linac and BDS, we design and model end-to-end tuning and feedbacks including specification of sensors and actuators. Make sure there is enough redundancy so bad sensors don’t impact feedbacks. Check expected time responses of feedbacks and tuning to disturbance rate. Perhaps do a full bunch by bunch simulation for many hours?? Look for a shortcut to avoid the infinite CPU time. Resources: 6 FTE years if everything is done once. 12 FTE years if it is done 3 times so people are checking each other. Considerable computing resources will be needed hopefully these exist at the lab already and hence don’t count as M&S. This effort can start slow and can extend to the beginning of construction. 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

8 Commissioning Description: Resources:
Work with schedulers (is there a work package somewhere to develop a construction schedule?) to develop a phased commissioning plan Specify extra hardware (temporary dumps, transport lines …) needed for phased commissioning Resources: .2 FTE level of effort through end of the EDR Then .5 FTE level of effort through 4th year of construction. Some beam operations start in 3rd year of construction 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting

9 Alignment Description: Resources:
Initial alignment and periodic realignment is very important. There needs to be an alignment group to plan how to do this and probably to do some R&D. This will be covered by the alignment group. Resources: 6Feb07 Beijing GDE meeting
