Reading at home Things to do at home:
Check book bags for current reading books and try to practice the N.S given by the teacher. Read to and with your child. This models good reading skills and promotes reading enjoyment. Regularly introduce new words (vocabulary) e.g. for the word big you could also introduce large, huge, enormous. This is not about reading the words but about your child hearing and saying them.
7
Reading at home Although we look at non fiction text types during whole class and group reading in our lessons, we know that children with wider background knowledge are more successful at reading later on. Readworks.org is free website that you can sign up for with articles short enough to read quickly. The children can pursue their own interests.

Using Bugclub online If you have access to the internet at home children can log onto Bugclub and enjoy reading books and completing different questions found in the eBooks. The quiz questions help them practice their reading skills. The questions all match to the reading level of the books. The books are also audio books, so children can enjoy hearing an expressive reading of the story. All teachers will try to allocate time for children to use Bugclub when possible.
