1 PAEMST Awards Program for Application Cycle 2019-2020

2 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
PAEMST is the Highest Recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade educator may receive for outstanding science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science instruction in the United States. The National Science Foundation (NSF) administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) 12/6/2019

3 108 exemplary teachers each year.
About PAEMST Established by Congress in 1983, the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year. An award may be given to two teachers (mathematics and/or science award category)  from each of the 50 states, Washington D.C., the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. Territories as a group (U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands).  12/6/2019

4 Awardees Receive: A certificate signed by the President of the United States A $10,000 award from NSF (used at Awardee’s discretion) A trip to Washington, D.C., for a recognition event which may include: an award ceremony; professional development activities; and discussions with policy-makers on how to improve  STEM education The opportunity to join a cohort of excellent STEM teachers for future collaboration Heather Landreth (NC), Tayana Thadal (NY), and Kristen Smith (NY) at the 2018 Awards Ceremony and Dinner 12/6/2019

6 Nominations and Applications
ANYONE may nominate a teacher Colleagues, Former Awardees, Principals, Students, Superintendents, Family Members, Friends OR teachers may apply directly at K-6th Grade Teachers: 7-12th Grade Teachers: 12/6/2019

8 Who Can Apply for 2019-2020 An applicant must:
Teach science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science as part of his or her contracted teaching responsibilities at the K-6th grade level in a public (including charter) or private school; Be a full-time employee of the school or school district as determined by state and district policies, with responsibilities for teaching students no less than 50% of the school’s allotted instructional time; Have at least five years of full-time employment as a K-12 teacher during which science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science has been a part of the applicant’s teaching duties prior to the academic school year; 12/6/2019

An applicant must: Teach in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, or the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands); Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; and Not have received the PAEMST award at the national level in any prior competition or category. 12/6/2019

12 Application Components
There are 3 components to the online PAEMST application: Administrative Component Teacher Information Form Employment Verification Form Letters of Recommendation (3) Resumé (not to exceed 2 pages) Demographic Information Form (optional) Narrative Component The narrative component consists of a written response guided by the Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching, supplemental materials, and references cited. Video Component A 30-minute video of the teacher teaching a class, lesson or experience (e.g., field or lab activities). 12/6/2019

13 Narrative Component Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching
Dimension One: Mastery of content appropriate for the grade level taught. Dimension Two: Use of effective instructional methods and strategies that are appropriate for the students in the classroom and that support student learning. Dimension Three: Effective use of student assessment to evaluate, monitor, and improve student learning. Dimension Four: Reflective practice and life-long learning to improve teaching and student learning. Dimension Five: Leadership in education inside and outside of the classroom. 12/6/2019

14 Guidelines for References Cited and Supplemental Materials
Supplemental Materials (SM): Provides supporting evidence for narrative responses to the Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching. Must be a maximum of 5 pages, submitted as a single file. References Cited: Cited sources should be captured in a document not exceeding 1 page. References may include books, articles, and/or multimedia that support the application. 12/6/2019

15 Guidelines for the Video Component
In order to provide in-depth evidence of the applicant’s knowledge and abilities, the video must: must correspond to the concept selected and initially discussed within the narrative response; must be of a single class, lesson or experience (e.g., field or lab activities) during the school year; must not be more than 30 minutes or one class period, whichever is shorter; must be continuous footage with only one allowed break. The one break allows applicant to provide evidence of more than one teaching strategy, such as student-centered instruction, teacher led discussion, lesson launch, exploration, or lesson summary; must come from a single camera and not contain multiple screens upon viewing; and must adhere to all district or school requirements and guidelines for parental release or student permission related to classroom video recording and sharing of student data; the use of a microphone is strongly recommended in order to ensure sound is audible; * If there is a break in your video files of less than one second due to camera/recording specifications, please combine the files and submit the single file.  If applicants have questions, they should reference the FAQs or 12/6/2019

17 Important Changes for 2019/2020 Application
The science award category will include all the natural sciences and engineering, while the mathematics category will include both mathematics and technology/computer science. All applicants will now be allowed up to one break in their video. The one break allows applicant to provide evidence of more than one teaching strategy, such as student- centered instruction, teacher led discussion, lesson launch, exploration, or lesson summary. State Finalists will now have the opportunity to respond to their state-level reviews through an addendum. State Finalists will be able to work with a mentor on the addendum, which is limited to five pages, before submitting it as an attachment to their application for national-level review 12/6/2019
