1 Chapter 1 Basics of Geometry

2 Section 4 Sketching Intersections

3 In geometry, figures intersect if they have any points in common
In geometry, figures intersect if they have any points in common. The intersection of two or more figures is the point or points that the figures have in common.

4 POSTULATE 3: Intersection of Two Lines Words: If two lines intersect, then their intersection is a point. Symbols: Lines s and t intersect at point P. POSTULATE 4: Intersection of Two Planes Words: If two planes intersect, then their intersection is a line. Symbols: Plane M and N intersect at line d.

5 Example 1: Name Intersections of Lines Use the diagram at the right. a
Example 1: Name Intersections of Lines Use the diagram at the right. a. Name the intersection of AC and BE. b. Name the intersection of BE and DF. c. Name the intersection of AC and DF.

6 Example 2: Name Intersections of Planes
Use the diagram at the right. Name the intersection of planes S and R. Name the intersection of planes R and T. Name the intersection of planes T and S.

7 Checkpoint: Name Intersections of Lines and Planes
Use the diagram at the right. Name the intersection of PS and QR. Name the intersection of TV and QU. Name the intersection of PS and UV.

8 Checkpoint: Intersections of Lines and Planes Use the diagram at the right. 4. Name the intersection of planes X and Y. 5. Name the intersection of planes Y and Z. 6. Name the intersection of planes Z and X.

9 Example 3: Sketch Intersections of Lines and Planes
Sketch a plane. Then sketch each of the following. A line that is in the plane A line that does not intersect the plane A line that intersects the plane at a point

10 Example 4: Sketch Intersections of Planes Sketch two planes that intersect in a line.

11 Checkpoint: Sketch Intersecting Lines and Planes
Sketch three lines that lie in a plane. Sketch two lines that intersect a plane at the same point. Sketch two planes that do not intersect.
