3 Introduction to 4IR What 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) is;
Technological convergence, where innovative technologies such as big data, the sharing economy, the internet of Things are increasing, connecting the physical world with the information world; Use of cyber-physical systems to monitor, analyse and automate business. The rise of the SMARTIES Smart Trucks, Smart Transportation, Smart Infrastructure, Smart Cities Why the SMARTIES? Improved citizen engagement services Improved services offered to the public Efficient and effective law-enforcement

5 Background “Our prosperity as a nation depends on our ability to take full advantage of rapid technological change. This means that we urgently need to develop our capabilities in the areas of science, technology and innovation” – President Ramaphosa, SONA 2018. Smart Transportation in South Africa; Smart Truck initiative since 2007, to increase heavy vehicle safety and road transportation efficiency; Crash rate reduction by about 35%; Road trips reduction by about 29%; Loads control regulation about 1%; About 11% fuel savings.

Provide basic ICT training at traffic colleges for law enforcement officials Raise the level of awareness to influence policy development Bridge the gap between technology innovations and policy development environment. Coordinate knowledge sharing between Tech-manufacture’s and law enforcement officials.
