Figure 12a Pitfalls in N staging at CT and PET. (a) Coronal CT image shows two enlarged lymph nodes in the right upper paratracheal area (arrows). (b) Coronal PET image shows FDG uptake in the primary tumor in the upper esophagus (arrow) and right upper paratracheal area. However, it is difficult to count the number of enlarged lymph nodes on the PET image, and the findings were considered N1 disease on the basis of the CT and PET images. Surgery confirmed squamous cell carcinoma with three malignant lymph nodes (N2 disease).
