2 EQ: Explain how compromise and acceptance are important to healthy relationships.
Define the terms relationship and role and identify the needs that relationships fulfill. Identify the traits that are present in a healthy relationship.

3 Brainstorm with your partner
Make two lists: 1. The benefits of spending time alone 2. The benefits of having relationships with other people Which list is longer? Why?

4 What is a relationship? A bond or connection between people Family
Extended Family Neighbors Friends Social or religious organizations Your city If you did find yourself suddenly stranded on a deserted island and removed from relationships, you might enjoy the peace for a little while, but eventually you’d probably get lonely. Having relationships can have a direct effect on a person’s total health. When you were younger, you had a limited circle of relationships. Now that you’re older that circle is widening. You can choose people who support and encourage your best qualities. No relationship can be healthy unless both parties feel valued and want the relationship.

5 What is a friendship? A significant relationship between two people based on caring, consideration and trust Companionship A source of help Share interests, hobbies or other friends Friendships can vary in their importance and in how challenging and complicated they are. Maintaining friendships can be hard work.

6 Relationships That Last a Lifetime
Family relationships provide the strongest bonds with others Give love and care Teach values Give guidance Who do you turn to when you are sick or injured? When you need food, clothing or a hug?

Provides for the safety of the community Sponsors recreation activities Provide needed services

8 What is your role? A role is the part that you play in a relationship
Define how we should act Can change in a relationship List 3 roles that you play in your life and an adjective to describe how you should act in each role. What are some of the roles you play in your life? Mom, wife, teacher, employee, friend, volunteer With your neighbor, your relationship could be as adult/child or friend. If they hire you to babysit or mow the law it becomes employer/employee.

9 Traits of a Healthy Relationship
Cooperation Compromise Respect Acceptance Honesty Trustworthiness Dependability Loyalty Empathy Cooperation - Working together for the good of all Compromise – each person gives up something in order to reach a solution that satisfies everyone – do not compromise if something goes against your values Respect others viewpoints even if you don’t agree Accept that nobody’s perfect Relationships are built on honesty. When you trust someone, you know they won’t do anything to hurt you A dependable friend is someone who is there when you need them. A loyal friend will speak kindly of you even when you’re not there. Empathy is the ability to share another person’s feelings or thoughts

10 What have you learned? Why are relationships so important to your health? What role are you playing when a friend comes into a fast-food restaurant where you work? Which kinds of relationships are usually the strongest and last a lifetime? They meet many of the basic human needs – safety, belonging, love, recognized Employee Family relationships, those based on respect, caring, cooperation and trust.

11 How does compromise help to strengthen a relationship?
What quality of a healthy relationship do two students working together on a poster exhibit? How does compromise help to strengthen a relationship? Cooperation Compromise makes each person feel that she or he has been heard, but it also places the relationship in a place of greater importance than individual wants.
