Lesson 6 The REVELATION of the Righteousness of God: ILLUSTRATION of Righteousness (Romans 4:1-25)
ITC Zapf Chancery 80

1) Description of Righteousness (3:21-31)
2) Illustration of Righteousness (4:1-25)

Romans 4:1 1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

Romans 4:1 1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? Using the words we and our, Paul aligns himself with the Jews. He will solidify his argument against justification by works with the story of the patriarch Abraham. No man was more important to the Jewish identity than Abraham. The history of God’s chosen people begins with the call of Abram.

Romans 4:2 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

Romans 4:2 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. Would God ordain a way for man to boast in himself? Psalm 115:1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

Romans 4:3a 3 For what saith the scripture?

Romans 4:3a 3 For what saith the scripture? We need to honor this question! 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Don’t settle for the Watsootsmi version!

Romans 4:3 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Romans 4:3 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Every Jew with an ounce of devotion in his heart knew about the promises God made to Abraham:

Genesis 15:3-6 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house [his chief servant, Eliezer] is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Romans 4:3 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Righteousness was bestowed upon Abraham the moment he believed God’s promise. This was a gift of grace, not a reward for work done.

Romans 4:4-5 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Romans 4:4-5 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Paul uses Abraham’s interaction with God as a template for everyone who comes to the LORD in faith.

Paul fortifies his argument even more with testimony from King David:

Romans 4:6-8 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Psalm 32:1-2a 1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity…

The truth that David was testifying of righteousness without works must have been revealed to Paul by the Holy Spirit.

But, asks Paul, is this blessing exclusive to the Jews?

Romans 4:9 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

Romans 4:9 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. Rather than answer this question directly, Paul asks a new question that leads his readers to see the answer for themselves: Was Abraham sealed with righteousness before or after he was circumcised?

Romans 4:10 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

Romans 4:10 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. (We can assume that few if any of the Jews had ever thought about this before Paul brought it to their attention.)

Romans 4:11 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

Romans 4:11 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Abraham was sealed with righteousness before he was circumcised so that his FAITH would be the central issue, and so that all people – circumcised or not – could follow in his steps.

Romans 4:11 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Paul’s earlier question, “Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also?” has been conclusively answered.

Romans 4:11 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Abraham is also recognized for an honor more important than being the biological forefather of the Jews.

Romans 4:12 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

Romans 4:12 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. Abraham is the biological forefather of the Jews, but he is the spiritual father of every Jew who shares his faith.

Romans 4:12 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. Now Paul will prove that the covenant God made with Abraham was not joined to the law God gave to Moses.

Romans 4:13-14 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

Romans 4:13-14 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: The unconditional promises made to Abraham were attained by faith. The law promised rewards for work well done. Furthermore, God made his covenant promise to Abraham 430 years BEFORE the law was given to Moses.

Romans 4:13-14 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Galatians 3:17-18 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Romans 4:15 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

Romans 4:15 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. No one born in sin could meet the demands of the law. As a result, the law only magnified the Jews’ sinful condition.

Romans 4:16 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Romans 4:16 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, The promise God made to Abraham was of grace and not of works. It was made before Moses received the law. Therefore it includes both those who were under the law (the Jews) and those who were not (the Gentiles). All of Abraham’s spiritual children – all who believe – are partakers of its blessings.

Romans 4:17 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

Romans 4:17 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Genesis 17:3-5 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

Romans 4:17 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. God quickens [revives] the dead. John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

Romans 4:17 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. His promises are as good as fulfilled the moment they are spoken.

Romans 4:18 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

Romans 4:18 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. Genesis 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

Romans 4:18 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. Paul used Abraham to show that the only requirement for righteousness is FAITH. Now he uses Abraham to show what real faith REQUIRES.

Romans 4:18 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. The tangible evidence said that Abram and Sara could not produce even one child. But faith is “the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1).

Romans 4:19 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:

Romans 4:19 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: NIV …he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead …and that Sarah's womb was also dead. But rather than consider their physical weaknesses, he considered God’s promise.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. This is what is required to have faith in God:

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. James 1:6-7 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. The glory does not fall upon the one who believes the promise. It falls upon the one who MAKES and KEEPS the promise.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. To benefit from God’s promises, one must be entirely convinced of his integrity.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Abraham’s conviction made him a ready recipient of God’s gift.

Romans 4:20-22 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now, was all this merely a history lesson? What is its significance to us today?

Romans 4:23-25 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Abraham believed God’s promise because he believe in God. Today, the spiritual children of Abraham believe in the same God – he who raised up Jesus from the dead.

Yes, faith is part of the equation. But let us always remember that it was Christ’s sacrifice – and not our faith – that made possible God’s great gift.
