The Benefits of hiring a retired superintendent
EMIS WITH FRED The Benefits of hiring a retired superintendent
2
Looking for an experienced emis coordinator anyone?
They aren’t easy to find! How do you offer expert services if you hire someone with no experience? You don’t go to school to become an emis coordinator! then came fred!
3
Win-win situation For the itc:
Lesser salary (due to be a retiree) – pay no benefits Gains from experience – priceless Choose a person who helps in areas you need Can work more independently Knows the Importance of getting data correct Realizes how important funding is Attendance is better as less home concerns
4
Win-win situation For the retired superintendent
No longer wants to be in charge (less responsibility) Not looking to move up in the company – happy with where they are Work part-time with flexibility Help other districts improve Picks projects where one sees need Keep up with changes Empathy for emis personnel
5
How fred started with emis and why
How I became an emis coordinator and why I became an emis coordinator in 1991 – hb140- legislators continue to want accountability Tied to everything from finances to report card measures Ex. F/R Lunch for Title. Also for gifted Ethnic make-up for gifted Importance of gifted not over identifying or under identifying
6
Tips from fred… Emis coordinator puts in what given. Value of emis coordinator. When asks for data be sure key people are supplying. Give emis coordinator time to go to conferences and presentations. When you need a why, give emis coordinator time to get you an answer. Attend meetings as groups or teams or help a person in your district. Examples: sfpr, gifted indicator. All people in the district need to an Take interest in emis. It delivers your state share.
7
Don’t say “I’m the superintendent, I don’t need to know anything about emis”
One doesn’t know emis in 1 year. Emis coordinators are worth their weight in gold. Be sure an error is by emis coordinator before jumping to conclusions. It could be the person that gave him/her the data. Provide computer and multiple monitors so they can compare data. EMIS REVIEWS CAN INCREASE YOUR FUNDING. SENDING OUT LETTERS IN THE SUMMER TO EXITING OPEN ENROLLMENT PARENTS - why SENDING OUT LETTERS in fall to all soes students – why
8
Checking soes on daily or weekly basis – gary fisher story
Working together on special education districts to help at end when excess costs are due. EMIS REVIEWS CAN INCREASE YOUR FUNDING.
9
Coding students right for funding -Ex
Coding students right for funding -Ex. Spec ed, preschool, gifted, All of these help in funding – even if on guarantee (below the line) Credibility – often one mistake and no one believes you. I live by the rule that if I don’t know it, I research it. As a former superintendent telling you this, I might have more credibility than just an emis coordinator, but in the itc that’s what I am. Trying to help district personnel with problems. i have no skin in game now. I’m not tied to a district. Concern with emis – one doesn’t know what they don’t know. Data at beginning of year is “old” data
10
key to success If district has good superintendent, treasurer, and emis coordinator= success 2 of 3 = still ok 1 of 3 = below acceptable 0 of 3 = losing your shirt
11
What to think about when looking for a fred…
Look for a person who knows and has worked closely with an itc and its personnel Person who can influence superintendents and treasurers on how important it is to be involved with emis and data Ability to laugh at limitations, but willing to try to adapt to change (computer knowledge) Helping others to stop saying “I don’t know emis and I don’t care to learn”. That person is not a good steward of district’s money.
12
In closing…. A retired superintendent can say in no uncertain words; “I’ve been there”, “You do have time, or make the time.” In helping a district with knowing how data, particularly financial, is generated can help the district plan and utilize its resources. Can tell district leaders they must support emis coordinators and personnel to give the emis coordinator what he/she needs in a timely manner. Put emis work to a higher priority in the district. We hope that esc superintendents will take this information back and share with their districts. You can be the stewards to help your districts.

Fred Burns Ext 112 Cindy alban Ext 250 The key to success is collaboration between personnel in the district and then the help the district receives from the itc personnel. It is truly a team effort. There is no “I” in team. But there might be some “old guy or gal” who might enjoy helping others, as part of the team!
