2 Types of Social Interaction
There are many forms of social interaction. Some help to stabilize society. Others promote change.

Exchange Competition Conflict Cooperation Accommodation

4 Exchange When a person, group, or societies interact to receive a reward or a return for their actions Rewards can be material or non-material. Ex. dating, friendship, family life Reciprocity - if I do this for you, what are you going to do for me?

5 Exchange Theory People are motivated by self-interests in their interactions with others. People do things for the rewards. Behavior that is rewarded is repeated.

6 Competition When two or more persons or groups compete to obtain a goal that only one can attain. If everyone follows the rules, competition is a means of motivating people.

7 Conflict The deliberate attempt to control by force, oppose, harm, or resist the will of another person. No rules are followed. Ex. War, silent treatment of friend,… Conflict can be useful because it reinforces group boundaries and strengthens group loyalty.

8 Cooperation When two or more people or groups work together to achieve a goal that will benefit many people. Cooperation often is used along with other forms of interaction.

9 Accommodation When people give a little and take a little.
