MANILLA WATER SUPPLY UPGRADE
COMMUNITY UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 2019

Background The existing Water Treatment Plant in Court Street has been in use since Much of its infrastructure is either at the end of, or past, its useful service life. Ageing infrastructure, equipment and technology limits the ability of the plant to treat a range of raw water quality conditions. The existing system has limited ability to draw water from alternate sources.

Existing Water Treatment Plant

Purpose The Namoi River is currently the primary source of raw water. The Manilla River has been an emergency source and has rarely been used. The upgrade will help provide a more secure water supply with the ability to source raw water from both Rivers. The new plant will treat, on average, 1.1 megalitres of water a day to meet the usual consumption needs, but will be capable of treating up to 3.5 megalitres when necessary. New pumps and pipeline system from the Manilla River will allow for more regular use and provide increased capacity.

Project Overview Construction of a new water treatment plant on a 34-hectare site Council owns between Kanangra and Reservoir roads; A new pump station and intake on the Manilla River; An upgrade to the intake and pump station on the Namoi River; and New pipelines that will be constructed from each intake to the new plant, following a route mostly along the road reserves.
