Session 5 Competition Day & Engineering Careers Information

The competition… There are 575 UK secondary schools and Girl Guiding units from across the UK taking part in the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge this year attending 30 regional competitions across the country. You will meet some of these teams at your regional competition over February/March and maybe even at the UK final!

Robot Challenge Mat There are 8 TASKS for you to attempt on the mat. You will have a total time of 5 minutes AND 30 seconds. You should work out a plan. Which tasks will you attempt? Maybe you will just focus on a few tasks - you don’t have to complete them all but we ask that all teams attempt TASK A. You can do the tasks in any order BUT TASK A should be performed FIRST while TASK H should be attempted LAST (if you choose to do it).

Task H: The Ramp Recycler
Robot Challenge Mat – The 8 Tasks Task A: Robot Showtime Program your robot to present a 30 second environmental message! Task B: More Trees Please Program your robot to ‘plant’ the tree in the target area of the nature & wildlife area. Task C: Pollution Clean Up Collect the two discarded TYRES that will have been placed on two of the 6 marked areas of the mat Task D: Retrieve The Eco Vehicle You need to get your eco vehicle back to the robot zone. it is currently secured behind the security gate in the eco centre. Task E: Battery Store The battery for your eco vehicle is in the battery store (inside the structure you built) and you need to get it back to the robot zone. Task F: Recycling Centre Program your robot to go to the recycling centre and retrieve both the ‘plastic’ (ping pong ball) and the engineer and then return them to the robot zone Task G: Charge Up The Eco Vehicle You need to get your amazing eco vehicle charged up at the charging station but it needs to be taken there by your robot Task H: The Ramp Recycler You need to program your robot to climb the ramp recycler, starting from the robot zone. Speed and Control Challenge
We are really excited about this! It is all about speed. Get your MINDSTORMS EV3 moving as quickly (and controlled) as possible. You need to program your ELECTRIC VEHICLE to… START in the YELLOW ZONE (your robot needs to fit inside this area). The timer will START as your EV exits the YELLOW ZONE. Get the WHOLE of your EV (including all cables, etc) into the WHITE ZONE as fast as you can. THEN get your EV to RETURN to the YELLOW ZONE. The timer will STOP as your EV re-enters the YELLOW ZONE. There is a 10cm high LEGO DUPLO WALL at the end of the track – try not to let your EV crash into it!

Robot Design In this part of the Robotics Challenge, your team needs to work together to be able to explain the thinking behind your robotic creations to a group of friendly reviewers at your Regional Competition Final. As Robotics Engineers, you have designed and developed amazing robots by continuously testing, evaluating, tinkering and improving them so that your robots can complete the Robotics Challenge. The competition day is your chance to chat with out STEM Ambassador reviewers about the brilliant designs and solutions you’ve come up with. Good luck!

General Guidelines Teams aged 11-14 can compete.
The team gaining the most points overall from the four areas combined will win. Judges will select the winners of each element using rules provided to teams. Adults are prohibited from directing team members during competition elements or interfering with the judging process. A positive atmosphere should be maintained by all. Our aim is to celebrate all that the teams have achieved through the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge.

COMPETITION RULES Only LEGO® Education components from MINDSTORMS core or extension sets may be used. Only one EV3 brick can be used in the game. The robot must start from the base in the Robot Challenge. The robot must be returned to the start box if it is touched by any team member or for any repair, alteration or reprogramming. Bluetooth® and WiFi communication with the EV3 brick is not allowed during the 5½ minutes of the Challenge. Scoring is outlined in the Student Handbook If any additional rules are necessary they will be declared at the competition briefing. So listen carefully! The judges’/umpires’ decisions are final!
