3. 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Flee “these things”… (6:11) Instead, pursue… (6:11)
The desire to be rich
The consequences that result in desiring riches
Do everything to get away from these types of things
1 Cor. 6:18, 1 Cor. 10:14, 2 Tim. 2:22
Instead, pursue… (6:11)
Righteousness
Godliness
Faith
Love
Patience
Gentleness
These verses are like a personal note to Timothy from Paul. He implores him to flee the enticing things that wealth can offer and the severe consequences that can result in loving money.
Other verses on fleeing sin:
1 Cor. 6:18-  Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
1 Cor. 10:14 - Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
2 Tim. 2:22 - Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Don’t play around with these things, get far away from them.
Righteousness – being right or just
godliness – respect and reverence toward God
faith – fidelity, loyal to God
love – agape, highest love possible
patience – steadfast, constant, edurance
gentleness – meekness, strength under control, has every instinct and passion under control
These qualities are a constant pursuit. We never master all of these, a lifelong process.
Rom. 12:21 – “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”

4. 1 Timothy 6:11-16
Fight the good fight, lay hold on eternal life..( 6:12)
Paul uses similar language in other places
1 Cor. 9:24-27, Eph. 6:10-12, 2 Tim. 2:3-5
Fighting the good fight allows us to grasp eternal life
To which you were called (6:12)
Called through the gospel
2 Thess. 2:14
And have confessed the good confession (6:12)
Timothy’s confession of faith in Christ
First fight (engage in a conflict, military or athletic) in Greek denotes continuous action. Keep on fighting the struggle in which all Christians are engaged.
1 Cor. 9: Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
Eph. 6: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
2 Tim. 2:3-5 - You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
Fighting for the faith means we are standing up against false teaching and professing God’s word in spite of what others may believe.
Lay hold on eternal life – Grasp eternal life. All our life we keep contending/fighting for The Faith so that at the end we may grasp the eternal life
All people are called in that they are invited, but only those who obey are the called out in this verse.
The call is not to fame and riches, but to eternal life.
Good confession: ( also mentioned in 6:13)
Rom. 10:10 -  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Acts 8:37 -Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

5. 1 Timothy 6:11-16
I urge you to keep this commandment without spot, blameless until Jesus’s appearing (6:13-14)
In the sight of God and Christ Jesus
Be on guard against any corruption of the gospel
Must keep doing this until the end
Which will be manifested in His own time (6:15)
Time is known only by the Father
Acts 1:7, Matt. 24:36
Reminder that all he does is in the presence of the Father and Son who are all knowing.
Reference to Jesus standing before Pilate and declaring/professing who He was
John 18:33-37
Timothy is charged yet again to make sure the teaching of the gospel remains pure and unblemished. Think of how many times this is mentioned in this short epistle.
Only the Father knows when this second coming/appearing of Christ will be
Acts 1:7 -  And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.
Matt. 24:36 - “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven,[a] but My Father only.

6. 1 Timothy 6:11-16 He who: (6:15-16) Is the Blessed and only Potentate
Is the King of kings
Is the Lord of lords
Alone has immortality
Dwells in unapproachable light
No man has seen or can see
Has honor and everlasting power
Potentate –”high officer” one “of great authority”
King of kings/Lord of lords – denotes His authority over all who may wear the title “king” or “lord”
Has immortality – “no death, incapable of dying”
Unapproachable light – “Now, this light is like the sun. We need it to see by, yet we cannot look into it, for it is too intensely brilliant.”
Psalm 104:2 – He covers Himself with light as a garment
No man has seen God
Some have seen some manifestation that God has allowed them to see
Exodus 33: But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.

7. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this age: (6:17-19)
Do not be haughty
Do not trust in these riches
Trust in the Living God
Do good, be rich in good works
Ready to give, willing to share
Store up a good foundation for the time to come
Lay hold on eternal life
Already addressed those who wish/desire to be rich. Now he talks to the ones who already have earthly riches.
City of Ephesus was one of the richest in the world at that time.
Haughty- Pride, arrogance and the disposition to look down on others is a temptation to the rich
Rom. 12:16- Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
Luke 12:15- And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness,[a] for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Don’t trust in riches – Riches offer no security for tomorrow or more importantly for the life to come
Luke 12:16-21 – parable of rich fool
Instead trust in God who gives us richly all things to enjoy
James 1:17 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Do good, be rich in good works – Use wealth in such a way to benefit the less fortunate. By practicing benevolence one can be rich in good works. In this way earthly riches can be a means to true/spiritual riches
Ready to give, willing to share/fellowship/communicate – willingness to share with less fortunate and willingness to associate with less fortunate. A Christian must fellowship with all brethren, down to the poorest and humblest.

8. 1 Timothy 6:20-21 Final instruction to Timothy (6:20-21)
Guard that which was committed to your trust
Avoid profane and idle babblings
Avoid contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge
Why? Because it has caused some to stray from the faith
Paul charges Timothy to keep diligent and watchful guard over the faith committed to his trust; to preserve it unaltered and uncorrupt, so it can be handed down and taught exactly as it was received.
This similar thought is mentioned 7-8 times in this epistle. (1:3, 18-20, 4:1-6, 16, 6:3-5, 12-14, 20, 21)
Profane and idle babblings (1:6, 4:7, 5:13, 6:5)
Some were relying on modern/earthly “knowledge”
1 John 4:1 - Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
