1 Welcome To GGJH Pre-AP (Advanced Placement) Information Session
May 23, 2017

2 What is a Pre-AP course? Pre-AP courses are designed for students who show a high level of interest in a subject area. Pre-AP courses give students rigorous academic experiences that will prepare them for AP courses in high school by Increasing the depth of writing expectations Increasing the complexity in reading expectations Increasing the depth and complexity in problem solving

3 Why should my student choose a Pre-AP course?
Research shows students who do well in AP classes in high school are more successful in college. AP courses in high school can earn a student college credit if the student does well on the AP exam at the end of the course.

4 6th Grade Pre-AP Offerings
Pre-AP ELA Pre-AP World Cultures Pre-AP Science Pre-AP Math – This course will compact aligned TEKS from all of 6th grade math and some of 7th and 8th grade math curriculum. These students would be on track to take Algebra I in the 8th grade.

5 7th Grade Pre-AP Offerings
Pre-AP ELA Pre-AP World Cultures Pre-AP Science Pre-AP Math & Intro to Algebra – These courses will compact aligned TEKS from all of 7th grade math and most of the 8th grade math curriculum. These students would be on track to take Algebra I in the 8th grade. (Students who choose Intro to Algebra I in 8th grade as an elective will automatically be enrolled in 7th grade Pre-AP math.)

6 8th Grade Pre-AP Offerings
Pre-AP ELA Pre-AP World Cultures Pre-AP Science Algebra I– Students enrolled in Algebra I will also require additional time during the day and at home to complete the 8th grade math TEKS using the Think Through Math program provided by the Texas Education Agency.

7 Math Plan to eliminate the need for doubling up math courses
6th Grade Pre-AP Math Students will learn aligned 6th, 7th, and 8th grade TEKS over a period of two years: 17 – 18 School Year: Pre-AP 18 – 19 School Year: Pre-AP 19 – 20 School Year: Algebra I 7th Grade Pre-AP Math Students will learn all 7th and most of 8th grade math TEKS in one year: 17 – 18 School Year: Pre-AP 18 – 19 School Year: Algebra I 19 – 20 School Year: (Freshman) - Geometry 8th Grade Algebra I Students will learn all 8th grade TEKS and Algebra I TEKS 17 – 18 School Year: Algebra I & Think Through Math 18 – 19 School Year: (Freshman) - Geometry

8 How would skills look in a 6th grade math Pre-AP course?
Grade Level TEKS: 6.6C – represent a given situation using verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, and equations in the form y = kx or y = x + b Pre-AP will also include: 7.4A – represent constant rates of change in mathematical and real world problems given pictorial, tabular, verbal, numeric, graphical, and algebraic representations, including d = rt. 8.5F – distinguish between proportional and non-proportional situations using tables, graphs, and equations in the form y = kx or y = mx + b, where b ≠ 0.

10 Summer Pre-AP Projects
For each Pre-AP course a student chooses to sign-up for the student must complete a Pre-AP Summer Project for that particular course Examples: An incoming 6th grader chooses to sign-up for Pre-AP Science and Pre-AP Math then the student must complete a summer project for both the 6th grade Pre-AP Science and Pre-AP Math courses A student going into the 7th grade chooses to sign-up for Intro to Algebra and Pre-AP ELA then the student must complete a summer project for both 7th Grade Pre-AP Math and Pre-AP ELA courses

11 Summer Pre-AP Projects
Summer Pre-AP Projects are due: AUGUST 18, 2017 by 3:30 PM to the front office of Gerdes Junior High School On each project make sure to include the following: Student Name Grade Level Course the project was completed for. Students who do not turn in a summer Pre-AP Project will be placed in a grade level course prior to the first day of school.

12 Projects Are Available For The Following Courses:
6th Grade Pre-AP Math 6th Grade Pre-AP Science 6th Grade World Cultures 6th Grade ELA 7th Grade Pre-AP Math (Intro to Algebra) 7th Grade Pre-AP Science 7th Grade Pre-AP Texas History 7th Grade Pre-AP ELA 8th Grade Algebra 8th Grade Pre-AP Science 8th Grade Pre-AP U.S. History 8th Grade Pre-AP ELA Art III
