Opponent Process Theory of Color Vision
Mainly associated with Dorothea Jameson [1920 – 2003] and Leo Hurvich [1910 – 2009] Working at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1940’s 1950’s 1960’s 1970’s 1980’s
2
Let us return to our friend, the spectrum of visible light
3
What we have been learning so far is Three Color Theory
rgb or hsb Reflect on the fact that three color theory is based on color matching experiments and the question: How many colors or wavelength regions does it take to make all the colors of the rainbow (visible spectrum)? But now we raise a new question -- Can we explain the facts of color APPEARANCE?
4
For example, consider what colors you see in negative colored afterimages
5
You can change the colors and experiment with what happens
6
At the beginning of the 1974 assigned paper, Hurvich and Jameson say,
“the central question of visual perception: Why do things look as they do? Because they are what they are? No, because we are what we are. . . it seems clear to us that the answer to the broad question "Why do things look as they do?" will be given in an informative way only when the principles of neural organization are known.
