Sweatshirt redesign Take a favorite sweatshirt that has seen better days This one was bought at Old Navy Left photo: Before Right photo: After This sweatshirt was taken from a boxy, large garment to a more structured, feminine look
19
Sweatshirt redesign Trim & embroidery floss Choose materials carefully
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Gray trim: 1 yd at $4.99 Elastic trim: 1 yd at $4.99 Blue trim: 3/4 yard at $2.99 Embroidery floss $0.89 X 3 colors.
20
Sweatshirt redesign Pilled fabric left, shaved, right Removing pills
The sweatshirt fabric is cotton The sweatshirt had very bad pilling. Using a shaver from JoAnn’s the pilling was removed and the fabric looked rejuvinated.
21
Sweatshirt redesign Fold to find & mark the center back and front
Draw straight line from neck to hem Colored chalk NOT waxy color
22
Sweatshirt redesign The shoulder was too long so a box pleat was sewn at the center back The center front was cut and shaped Rib was removed and neck shaped
23
Sweatshirt redesign To create a more feminine silhouette:
Have a friend pin shape on the side seam and the sleeve Use tailor’s chalk to shape the side and the sleeve on the right side Transfer the shape to the left side
24
Sweatshirt redesign Fold center back horizontally just below the end of the box pleat Pin 7 inches of trim horizontally to the center back, across a 9-inch span, just under the center black pleat. This trim is on an elastic, so it gathers up nicely at the center back.
25
Sweatshirt redesign Collar detail Finished collar
The collar is made of three different trims. The elastic-based trim was stitched on slightly gathering the edge so that the collar would shape nicely around the neck. The end of that trim is stitched with a box pleat and folded under.

Super styling your sweatshirt
YOU CAN DO IT! Be flexible – your idea probably will evolve Pin things in place and plan before sewing Focus on the right-hand side and transfer markings to the left Use hand stitches that are invisible Use machine stitches as often as possible
