1 Federation WASH Developmental WASH Update, Stockholm WASH Advisors Meeting August, 2016.

2 Developmental WASH Update:
Federation WASH Developmental WASH Update: SDG 6 Indicators – confusion in the UN – more delay likely – we must move forward ourselves. UN agencies push for narrow and specific performance indicators aligned to their own expertise, which improves the odds “that projects suited to their agency will be prioritised, and increases their access to any funds”. Donors demand broad indicators that are easily measured and quantified, which all too often means “performance indicators tend to be associated with outputs rather than impact”.

3 SDG 6 Overview, Output Indicators and monitoring:
Federation WASH SDG 6 Overview, Output Indicators and monitoring:

4 UNICEF/WHO UNEP, HABITAT, UNICEF, FAO, UNESCO, WHO & UN WATER
Federation WASH Monitoring SDG 6, most likely: To meet this need, the Integrated Monitoring initiative GEMI was established in 2014 as an inter-agency initiative composed of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), operating under the UN-Water umbrella and complementing JMP and GLAAS UNICEF/WHO UNEP, HABITAT, UNICEF, FAO, UNESCO, WHO & UN WATER UN-water/WHO global analysis and assessment of sanitation and drinking-water (GLAAS)

5 Civil society RC/RC Role?
Federation WASH Civil society RC/RC Role? ‘That’s where civil society organisations, especially those that transcend local jurisdictions, could play a decisive, affordable, and credible role. Local and international NGOs working in the water and sanitation sector at country level, could collect information on service delivery, performance standards, the presence of functioning treatment plants and the human resource basis of utilities.’ This would/should link to the new GWSI mapping portal.

6 Development Updates continued:
Federation WASH Development Updates continued: New Funding Opportunities/Trends: UNICEF partnership – how will it develop? WASH and Nutrition (USAID and DFID) ‘Flagship’ or integrated Projects (TBC but multi donor) EU Africa Trust Fund and Resilience funding. CDC, Gates and Global fund – some WASH opportunities. OFID – co-financing. Corporates/foundations. (Nestle expansion, Cartier. AIRBUS, UBS and others) Urban and Nutrition WASH.

7 Federation WASH Development Updates: GWSI mapping, visualisation and marketing (with SALESFORCE, GWSI mapping portal in design phase – pilot this year, new mapping early Not just data collection but analysis and tailored visualisation.
