7 FOUNDER Eric Midwinter
“Whether it is the House of Commons or the local tennis club, some will rise to take leadership responsibilities. But we must not, in a movement dedicated to co-operativeness, have situations where a few do everything and many do nothing.” Third Age Matters, Summer 2019

8 CURRENT CHAIR Ian McCannah
“Just as members share their expertise when giving a talk to a U3A monthly meeting, other members are providing their time and knowledge when they lead interest groups, take on committee roles and organise social events, cultural visits and study days.” Third Age Matters, Summer 2019

9 “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start”

10 Activity On the sheet provided … list ‘welcome ideas’ from, and activities used by, your own U3A and share those ideas with a person on your table Hand in your completed sheet to the workshop facilitators who will collate all responses into a ‘welcome ideas’ information sheet In due course, some time after the Conference, the resulting information sheet will be circulated to all workshop delegates

15 Health Check (Investing in Volunteers)
If you want to assess the quality of your volunteer management and involvement, prove and improve the effectiveness of your work with volunteers, and enhance your organisation's reputation, Investing in Volunteers provides the ideal framework. Achieving the standard shows your volunteers – and potential volunteers – how much they are valued and gives them confidence in your ability to provide an outstanding volunteer experience

16 Health Check (U3A) 10 key questions
The questionnaire is intended as a self-help tool only. It is for local U3A Trustees to use as a checklist to help them to monitor the health of their own U3A. The results will not be seen by anyone else and it is entirely up to each U3A to make use of it or not as they wish. (available from the Advice/Downloads page of the National U3A website)

17 Volunteers’ Week (volunteersweek.org)
Volunteers’ Week is about celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. During the week, hundreds of events and celebrations take place across the country, saying thank you to volunteers and recognising their invaluable and diverse contribution to the UK When thanking your volunteers, take a moment to remember each and every one of them. From Trustees and Group Leaders to Tea-makers and Chair- stackers. Volunteers’ Week is a great time to think about the fantastic contribution all your volunteers make.

Trustees are the people ‘in charge’ of a charity.  They play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the work of the charity. Trustees’ Week is an annual event to showcase the great work that trustees do and highlight opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved and make a difference.
