TULANE UNIVERSITY Why focus on Wellness?
Nearly one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, and does not know it. Chronic diseases related to lifestyle account for 70 percent of total health care spending. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S. Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and can lead to serious illness, disability and decreased quality of life. An estimated 66 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese.* There’s been a lot of buzz about wellness lately, perhaps you’ve read the headlines? Some of you have already made an investment in workplace wellness But, likely many of you are thinking “Why Wellness? Does it really matter?” The reality is that you can no longer afford to ignore the importance of individual lifestyle decisions on your health care costs! 1. Did you know that chronic diseases related to lifestyle account for approximately 70% of total health care spending? And many of these health disorders are the result of modifiable health risks? 2. The costs associated with these modifiable health risks can be significant Independent studies, conducted for Steelcase and Dupont in the early 1990s estimated additional health care costs per employee for specific modifiable health behaviors. What the companies found is that smokers cost them an additional $285 and $960 (respectively) in health care costs Obesity cost $222 and $401 more And Elevated Cholesterol $189 and $370 more 3. And, to make matters worse, your healthy population isn’t staying healthy. Did you know that 59% of your health care costs next year will come from this year’s lower cost employees as they develop more serious conditions? Implementing a wellness program today can help mitigate that risk. Wellness makes good business sense because it allows you to focus on keeping your healthy population healthy. 4. Finally, Wellness can produce a return on investment. Various studies compiled by the University of Michigan suggest that for every dollar you invest in a comprehensive Wellness program, you can realize a 3:1 return on your investment over a 3- 5 year period This return will be realized in a variety of ways, including reductions in absenteeism and improvements in productivity and morale. And the potential savings on unrealized health care costs in keeping healthy people healthy could be truly significant. Health Screenings Know the numbers that count…
Many serious health conditions develop over time, but they can be delayed or prevented if you know your risks and make healthy changes. Understand your health risks by having a Health Screening performed. These screenings will measure: Blood pressure Glucose Cholesterol Body Mass Index (BMI) Don’t know your numbers? It’s easy to get them. Simply visit your Physician to get your screening. The Tulane medical plans include one preventive exam per year covered at 100%.
