Welcome to Somerset Academy’s Open House! I am Ms. Spencer and I am very delighted to be your child’s 2nd grade teacher. Together, we are going to have a great school year! Welcome!

5 The 2nd grade curriculum consists of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Somerset Academy will follow the Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS) and Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS) Writing is now infused within English and LA. We will be utilizing Journeys Reading, Science, and Go Math Curriculum by Harcourt. We will also incorporate Scholastic Newsletters, I-Ready, and the Magic Tree House novels for additional learning and enrichment. Curriculum

10 Planner Planners are used daily and provide much information such as the year long calendar of school activities, homework, spelling/vocabulary words and notes from school to home. Reviewing the planner nightly will give you an opportunity to check and discuss your child’s homework and progress. You can purchase the planner on-line (Activity Name: PLANNER SET – 2nd Grade – Ms. Spencer) Have your child bring receipt and his /her planner will be delivered to my classroom. Planner Fee – $8.00

11 Homework * Homework is assigned everyday (Mon-Thurs.) and turned in the last day of the week for a grade. Students should expect approximately 30 minutes daily in order to reinforce material covered in class. Students will record their homework daily inside their planner. It will also be available on my Web Page and weekly update. Please keep all homework assignments including the composition notebook (This is where your child will complete their vocabulary and spelling homework) inside the Red Homework Folder.

12 Homework - Continued Vocabulary Homework
Mondays : Vocabulary – Define words 1-8 Tuesdays : Sentences for each vocabulary word (Not Spelling ) Wednesdays : Readers Notebook Page Thursdays : Spelling Words 5x each. Fridays : No homework Math Students complete the assigned pages for each night and turn them in at the end of the week. Reading Students are required to read minutes every weeknight any book or story of their choice. IREADY– Students will have I-Ready HW and will be given a grade based on lessons passed. 13 Tests Tests/Assessments are (45%) and count toward your child’s final average. A Vocabulary Test, Spelling Quiz, and Reading Test will be given at the end of the week. In addition, your child will alternate between taking a phonics quiz and/or grammar quiz at the end of the week. Your child will not be allowed to take home the Journeys Reading Textbook. You can access the book on-line through Thinkcentral.com (Passwords coming soon) Math/Science/Social Studies Tests will not be weekly. It depends on when we complete the chapter. I will notify you in advance before a test. Please check Pinnacle weekly to track your child’s progress.

14 Pinnacle Pinnacle Parent Access Pinnacle is our online grade book, and it is available for parent access. We are providing this access through our Pinnacle Internet Viewer (PIV) feature. The ability to monitor your child's grades, attendance and any assignment information can now be securely viewed from your Internet Browser at home. This secured access requires an Internet connection and a confidential user name and password issued to the parent by the school. Directions: Parent Pinnacle Access 1. Log on to:  access through our Somerset homepage under Pinnacle. 2. Enter the User name:  Student’s ID number     3. Enter Password: This is the student’s birth date in this form (YYYYMMDD) 4. Choose the School:  Somerset Academy Elementary (Chapel Trail) or Somerset                                         Academy Middle/High (Chapel Trail)  5. Click on Logon

16 Communication Communication is an important part of success for your child. I will provide weekly updates via my Somerset Web Page. e=u The fastest way to reach me is by . Please feel free to me at with any questions or concerns anytime. Friday folders are sent home each Friday. Please look through it, keep any papers from the left pocket and return anything from the right side on Monday.

17 Parent Volunteer Hours
Parent participation is vital to our school’s success and helps us thrive in so many ways! We encourage volunteerism through a variety of involvement including PTSO, holiday events, field trips, academic competitions, lunch assistance, carpool, etc. We kindly ask each family to complete 30 volunteer hours per school year. 15 hours must be completed by February in order to re- register. All 30 hours must be completed by mid-May in order to obtain a confirmed seat for the following school year.

18 Uniforms Uniforms are mandatory. All students are required to wear:
uniform polo shirts with the Somerset Academy logo in colors which include navy blue, light blue, white and striped blue/white. khaki or dark blue pants with the Somerset Academy embroidery labeled by the pocket. ONLY solid navy or a Somerset Academy apparel jackets. Physical Education uniform (K-5th) Fridays are SPIRIT and JEANS DAYS! Students are to wear their grade level spirit shirt and JEANS (not distressed). DRESS DOWN DAYS are the last Friday of every month for $2! Keep in mind students still must adhere to the dress code:   Students may not come to school in any of the following: Leggings Open toed shoes of any sort Backless shoes and or “crocs” Distressed jeans (jeans day) Shorts of any length less than fingertip level Tank tops/spaghetti straps/sleeveless tops

19 Somerset Academy follows Broward County Schools Attendance Policy 5.5
This means every minute counts, from absences, tardiness, and early sign-outs. School begins at 8:30 am. However I strongly suggest your child arrives by 8:15 am, that is when I will open my doors. Students that arrive late to school must have parents sign them in the office and pick up a late pass before walking to the classroom. 5 tardies = 1 absence. If your child is absent more than five times in a quarter The Broward County School Board may be contacting you regarding the excessive absences. Absences: Elementary Attendance Clerk, Jacqueline De Varona However please Send notification of absence via Somerset Academy Webpage. -Parents -Student Absence Note There you can fill out your child’s information and even upload Dr.’s Note. If you are planning for a trip or special occasion, you must submit a letter and get prior approval from administration. Failure to get pre-approval may result in unexcused absences on your child’s attendance record. Please do not plan trips during the month of May. This is when our Primary End of Year Tests take place. Attendance

20 Dismissal We start dismissal at 2:25 pm.
Carpool pickup is from 2:25 -2:45 p.m. **If your child is not picked up by 2:45p.m. you will receive a phone call and your child will be placed in a LEAP classroom. You will have to pay a fee of $25.00 for picking up your child late. Early Release Days – dismissal is at 12:30 p.m. If you pick-up from the car lane: Please hang colored decal from rearview mirror and make sure to include your child’s name using a dark marker. Early Pick-up is not allowed after 1:30 P.M. If someone new is picking up your child, please send me an or call the office. Please inform the person picking up that they will need to show me their driver’s license before I can release your child to them. Dismissal

21 Field Trips If your child is going to be attending one of our class field trips you must pay online. This is a 2nd Grade Team Policy. Field trips must be paid by the due date if not your child will not be able to attend. This is a school wide policy. Please send in 2 front/back copies of your child’s insurance card (Must have in order to attend fieldtrips). Spirit Shirt: The 2nd grade Spirit Shirt must be worn on all field trips. You must purchase it on-line (Activity: Spirit Shirts – 2nd grade – Ms. Spencer)

Online lunch payments are available online! LUNCH APPLICATIONS: Your child may be eligible for free or reduced priced breakfast or lunch. Applications are available in your beginning of the year packets. Please fill out the application in its entirety and return it to your child’s teacher. You will then receive a notice if you qualified for the program. You are responsible for paying full price for meals until you receive notification stating otherwise. Please remember: ~The gas station is not an authorized loading/unloading zone as it is private property. ~As ‘good neighbors’ we want to respect their business and customers. ~When leaving campus, parents will make a right turn and exit on 196

26 Important Reminders We are a PEANUT/NUT Free Campus.
Students are to arrive on campus no earlier that 8:15am unless enrolled in morning care, sibling care, shuttle service or having breakfast. Please pack a poncho for those rainy days. Always have your hanging car tag clearly displayed to help with arrival and dismissal. Early sign-outs must be before 1:30pm. “HANDS FREE SCHOOL ZONE!” Safety is our #1 priority. Vehicle cell phone use is not permitted within the school and can result in a ticket. We are a PEANUT/NUT Free Campus.

27 Reminders *Student of the month –Students’ vote
Birthdays – If you wish you may celebrate your child’s birthday during your child’s lunch time. Cupcakes are the easiest to distribute. Please wait for students to finish eating their lunch before handing out the treat. Snacks must be healthy (No candy or soda) it should be something he/she can eat within 5 minutes. (Provide utensils if needed) Reminders

Students must arrive to North Campus no later than 7:30am in front Building A Shuttle departs at 7:35am promptly. Late arrivals must be taken to campus by their parents.
