1 What is an acceptable Risk?

2 Pipelines are already really safe, so relax, be happy
If you think about pipeline safety like gambling, and consider that in the past 3 years there have only been 3.5 deaths or injuries for every 100,000 miles of pipeline, you will find that the odds of the pipeline that runs through your backyard of actually killing you if very very small.

3 Relax, be happy? On the other hand, giving the odds of a pipeline killing a person to one of the families of one of the 440 people that have been killed by pipelines in the past 20 years is liable to make you understand how that argument is ridiculous to many people

4 Who decides the risk I take?

5 What is an Acceptable Risk?
Three things to remember • Only an individual can decide what they believe to be an acceptable risk for them self • There are no universally acceptable risks • Strictly speaking people do not accept risks. They accept options that entail some level of risk

6 To be successful risk communication needs to be more than one-way messages from experts to non-experts

7

8 Real Risk Communication
--- an interactive process of the exchange of information and opinion among individuals, groups, and institutions --- National Research Council

9 Let’s Be Truthful Risk Management is about money
Pray nothing goes wrong, because in these days of billion dollar profits the public is not going to understand why pipeline companies or regulators didn’t decide to spend more to manage these risks better
