1 Welcome! 1. Take out the Sunshine in a lab paper from yesterday
2. Finish writing your reasoning

2 Sunshine in a Bag Learning TARGET:
Be able to classify an substances physical and chemical properties and if a physical or chemical change occurs.

3 A catchy tune! Wait for it…

4 Let’s get REAL… You already know the difference between physical and chemical properties Now, we are going to whiteness physical and chemical changes.

5 Physical Properties – it is what it is, nothing new, NO change, what you observe (EASIER TO IDENTIFY)  Chemical Properties – has the ability to be something different, has the potential for change, makes something that wasn’t there before (HARDER TO IDENTIFY) 

6 Let’s make Sunshine in a bag!
Substances: Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) Phenol Red (C19H14O5S)

7 DESCRIBE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Substances: Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) Phenol Red (C19H14O5S) Record everything you observe on your lab sheet. Use your 5 senses!

8 Just based on what you have observed… Can you tell if they have any chemical properties?
NO! WHY?... Chemical properties are harder to identify. Typically you have to test things to see if they … Can react Combust Are flammable

9 Let’s do it!!!! What happened?????????
Place 5 ml of Sodium bicarbonate in one corner of the bag then twist the corner and hold. Place 5 ml of Calcium Chloride in the other corner (Do NOT LET ANYTHING MIX YET!) Have Mrs. Stilz add phenol red to the Calcium Chloride and then quickly seal the bag… mix! What happened????????? Add the isolated Sodium bicarbonate to the Calcium Chloride mixture.

11 CER! Complete the CER for the Sunshine in a Bag lab!
Claim: Write your own… answer the question: What occurs as calcium chloride, baking soda, and phenol red are combined together? Evidence: What things did you do and observe to “prove” and support the answer you provided? Reasoning: Explain why your evidence supports your claim.
